never heard this name in my life
It's not as common as the rest of the "eauxs", but I've run into the name all over Louisiana. Predominatly in the River Parishes (LaPlace, Reserve, Vacherie, Lutcher, etc.) Pronounced C_N_O.

I flew with a guy in HMH-465 with the last name Hohle. How common is that?
(Of course, his call sign was "Cajun")

Some were shipped here from France in the early 1720's as soldiers - to occupy the territory.

Aucoin
Or - "oh-qwann"
That's the way they say it in Ville Platte. I'll take that as the official pronunciation.

My Great Grandfather was named Marius Thibodeaux. I always thought that was a great cajun name.

Many non French settlers in La. began speaking Parisian French and Cajun French during the time when the French dominated parts of La. Also some non French people who had settled in Canada for a while came here with the others during the migration. That`s why some non French names in La. are considered Cajun names.
Not all French names in La. are Cajun French (from Canada during the migration), some are Parisian French (from France), it depends on the origin.

Fontenot = total coon arse

I do a lot of title work. Was in Opelousas searching property with a Fontenot involved.
They had a separate index book ( at the time probably 1500 pages of single spaced computer printouts) just for the Fontenot last name.
