The fisherman locally claim they've decimated the King Salmon population.

we have both resident and non resident pods, even get them downtown once a year or so, which is a real treat.

They usually bring their kids along so they're fairly well behaved, unless youre a seal or otter.

Go watch videos of orcas hunting/killing. They are flat out brilliant hunters/killers.

How in the hell would they know all that by only seeing a dude in a scuba suit and flippers?

As intelligent as they are we have no way of knowing how far are history goes back with whales. They used to be terrestrial, or amphibious animals.

Used to fish out of Port O’Connor with a retired aggie marine biologist. He had some great orca pics but all we saw in person once was a whale shark. That was awesome, just a massive animal, but longed for the orca on those “deep blue” trips. They’re out there.

my gut says they recognize a lot of us in themselves. their behavior, familial relationships, and probably communication, are so human like.

I just saw a YouTube e video the other day of this guy fishing and all of a sudden 3 juvenile orcas come up to him and theyre acting frantic and keep swimming away in the same direction and stopping about 50 yds out and looking back. It finally clicks with the guy that they want him to follow them, so he does. A few hundred yds away is a huge female orca with her tail caught in a net. He gets his knife out and starts cutting her free. The whole time, she never once thrashed or act scared. In fact, she was very calm and cooperative. Those orca kids found and used a human to help save the life of an adult (possibly one of the juveniles mother). That's some serious brain power for a wild animal.

It blew my mind.

They probably just saw the Blackfish documentary and that shite didn't set well with them. I imagine cable and movie releases are pretty delayed out in the great wide ocean.

Many animals are far more capable than we want to give them credit for.

A couple years ago a small pickup ran into a guardrail. A dog was in the truck, or bed, and got ejected. This was in the middle of the night. The dog took off down the road and someone spotted him. They got out to try to get the dog off the road, but he'd come up just close enough and turn to run back towards the wreck. He kept doing that, and the people followed until they found the truck and got the occupants rescued.

I've seen another video from a woman who is a bird watcher. She visits the same wooded area regularly. I don't remember the species, but one of her "regular" birds was acting strange, flying up to her, landing near and then retreating, over and over. She followed, and the bird took her to its nest where she had fresh hatchlings. It was like she was showing off.

I think we have a greater connection to the wild than we will ever really understand.

Duh, they leave no survivors and plant shark teeth at the scene…

They are serious killers.

There is one known attack in the wild. Happened to a surfer off the coast of California in the 1970s and the bite marks matched an orca, not a shark. But it was a one bite and done attack, likely a case of mistaken identity. The surfer survived.
