Thousands Of Amazon Employees Revolt As CEO Makes Them Show Up In Office At Least Three Days Per Week

LINK

Amazon employees are furious as the company rolls back remote work arrangements, with some threatening to quit and others drafting petitions in reaction to a recent announcement that they must report to the office at least three times per week.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy wrote in a memo to employees on Friday that the company believes “teams tend to find ways to work through hard and complex trade-offs faster” when they are in the same physical location. Shortly after the announcement, hundreds of Amazon staffers started joining an internal Slack channel called Remote Advocacy; there were more than 14,000 members of the channel as of Tuesday, according to a report from Business Insider.

Nearly 80% of workers in the channel claimed they would start to look for another job because of the new policy. “This is going to be absolute chaos and make everyone’s work distracted for probably a quarter, maybe longer,” one disgruntled employee wrote. “It’s hard to be productive with so much uncertainty injected into our lives.”

The folks that work in their distribution centers show up to work a lot more often than that...

These companies created the monster, gave these tech workers way too much power and perks.

Ya it's almost like they became one of the most powerful and richest companies on the planet in spite of being in the office

It's just like anything else. Some dingus ruins it for everyone, and it's both sides. Some bosses are just control freaks, and some employees won't be available online when they're supposed to be. The only reason I'm back in college is to get a degree and start looking for a WFH job. If it doesn't work out, I'll just stay offshore.

I don't blame them. I haven't shown up to an office in 1.5 years. It is fantastic

We never went back to the office full time but it is a big deal for some people. I don't really give a crap either way. I suspect we'd lose some employees if they were asked to go back 5 days per week.

This is simple. If 95%+ of your job requires you to use a computer or a computer is the best method of completing the work, then there is no fricking reason to drive into an office and sit around a bunch of other people on computers.

Good. Maybe they can drop off some packages on time on their way in.

See, I'd counter this. Some weeks I'll show up every day, if the project gets done better and quicker that way. Some weeks I won't come to the office at all and work remotely, if the project gets done quicker and better that way.

Painting with a broad brush and micromanaging people that don't need to be micromanaged is a sure way to chase off good workers

Apparently people who are paid a lot of money to analyze this stuff say differently.

Amazon has generally gone to shite since Covid. It was headed there, anyway, but Covid and the resultant lunacy accelerated it. Maybe it isn't such a bad idea to have people start going back to the office.

It’s actually a few reasons:

1) it’s because no boss has the guts to divide employees into “good performer who gets leeway to work from home” and “slackers who need the structure who need to be in office”. so like you said, it’s one way or the other right now

of course, the way out is to not hire any employees who need structure, but that wasn’t easily done the last few years. but with big layoffs and tides turning back to employers, we are starting to see the shift.

2) big tech went all on in these huge “campuses” for employees, so they need the bodies back in the office because they can’t just shut those down cheaply or easily. they aren’t as nimble to pivot like other companies who were just leasing space

the hybrid flexible approach is the best way and makes the most sense

I bet 90% or more of their office workers have little to do with whatever you experienced “going to shite”

These people are working on amazon’s cloud services and shite like that. These people aren’t the one’s making sure your package arrives in 2 days or less lmao

Are those well-paid people working on a computer in an office surrounded by other people working on computers?

I’m sure y’all will make plenty “learn to weld” jokes in here but welders aren’t made, they’re born and no little soft work from homer could ever run a bead

As someone who works 70+ hours a week most of the year on a catfish farm I can’t find any pity for these people
