And most of the chemicals were burned.
A good cold front will disperse most of that

Mayor Pete: "Obviously we need more trains of color."

As far as vinyl chloride contaminating the Mississippi River goes, it’s not really a big deal.

Correct

You got me curious... what would it take for a liquid to be a big deal for the entire river?
Seems like it would take a helluva lot because there's a shite ton of water that comes down that river. Wouldn't anything be effectively diluted in a matter of days, other than some type of sheen or slick that stays on top?

I am so confused. Some poison is put into the river by the gov't. Poison has been put in drinking water already by the gov't for decades. Why worry about one and not the other?
Maybe this river contamination is just the gov't trying to prevent more cavities???

1982 Christmas union carbide had an unfortunate acrolien tank explosion. Toxic material. 35 thousand people were evacuated by midmorning. No on site or offsite injuries experienced. Material remains in broken underground tanks was properly combusted completely in plant boiler furnaces. Took a lot of intelligent work by the highly competant emergency responders.
Blowing up VC tank cars is not intelligent and released the toxic gas on a planned activity

Basically the contamination is coming right to the Mississippi River
Do you know how much had to be present to reach from East Palestine, 10+ miles to the Ohio River?
Because it ain’t one fricking tanker.

^^^ THIS ^^^ is a solid reply.
I regret that I have but one upvote to cast.

If venting and burning off VC is their plan to “poison a water supply”, it’s a pretty bad and ineffective one. But I guess that would be on par for them

I’m from Louisiana. I’ve been exposed to this kind of shite in the Mississippi River for years. I’m immune.

They’re poisoning our land and water

Don’t be disingenuous. You were asking if there would be a national shelter in place order. You were also using EPA water quality data from last year to illustrate the environmental catastrophe.
There’s a lot of room between “national shelter in place” and “literally no impact anywhere.”
There’s a lot of sensationalism going around on Twitter. The link in the OP is no exception. Reality is that while this is awful for the folks living near the derailment, it’s unlikely to have a ton of real impact nationwide. And by “real impact” I mean something that can’t be fairly easily mitigated.

Meanwhile we have had like 30 whales wash up on shore dead. Some are saying off-shore wind farms are causing it.
