winner based on penetration

The worst rule ever created.

Although my high school team won a game directly due to that rule when I was in high school. The rule still sucked.

The Oregon.Kansas State and Texas.Aggie ones are just kinda whatever.

The one point was scored by the team that had just scored a TD, so the end result was their blocked XP being just as good as a converted XP.

The one point safety being scored by the defense, well that probably isn't just ever going to happen.

We need an Iowa for the NFL.

Iowa would definitely win a game 8-6 where they get a 1 point safety and score a TD on a blocked punt return or some shite

off topic but this reminded me. When I was a Jr in HS we were playignh our big cross town rival who was exponentially better thorughout history at football. Our team was pretty good that year though and the game ended up going to overtime. Becuase of some hairbraned dumbshit rule that I can only imagine is "bc of the kiddddsss!!!" after the game was still tied after OT the officials declared the winner based on penetration. The other team had more yards accumulated in OT so they were awarded 1 extra point and the win. Boy there were some unhappy folks in that stadium ha
I'm made right now about it FOR you!

I remember in 1978 H.L.Bougeois went to their first playoff game with Jesse Myles at running back. Man he was good. Anyway the game ended in a tie, but I think it was Covington advanced to the next round in the playoffs because they had 1 more first down than H.L.B.

At least in Louisiana they developed overtime to get rid of penetrations and first downs deciding games

Those rules were from the days HS ball was played 10 yards at a time… passing teams that get chunk plays would be screwed by them

A 1 point safety is when the team trying to score a 2-point conversion or PAT turns the ball over, the defense takes the ball out of the end zone, then gets tackled in the end zone for a safety.

I've been watching football for a long time, and I had no idea that was a thing.

Here is an example of that happening.

My question is where are the 4 and 5 point scores in football? There's a gap between a 3 point FG and a 6 point TD. How about a FG beyond the 40 yard line is 4 points and beyond the 50 is 5 points?

It happened in a Texas vs. Texas A&M game in the early 2000s as well. That was the first time I ever remember seeing it happen.

You're referring to the 2004 UT/A&M game and that play essentially ended up counting the same as if the kicking team converted the extra point. It was a weird way for the offense to end up scoring the one point anyways.

To get to the 6-1 scorigami, the ball has to change possession twice on a two point conversion attempt for this to happen. The offense has a bad snap, for example, and the ball rolls all the way downfield, where the defense recovers it trying to take it back for two points themselves. The defense then fumbles at the goal line, the offense picks it up, and gets tackled in their own end zone (98 yards away from where the play started). That results in one point for the defense.

I don’t think 1-0 is theoretically possible (barring a scoring rule change) unless I’m missing/forgetting something. A 1-point safety can only occur on a PAT/two-point attempt.

Would 1-0 be possible in OT once the teams have to start going for 2s? 0-0 regulation game. First two possessions come up empty for both teams, no TDs or FGs.

Further, 2-1 could happen as well right?

Team 1 goes for 2 and defense gets TO and tries to return it, exits the end zone and then gets tackled in end zone. 1-0.

Same team then gets their chance at 2 and scores.

Isn’t the one point drop kick still legal? If so that’s a much more possible version of the one point play. I think it was Flutie that told the coach he was ready if needed before every game.

It's a three point play.

Even if after a fair catch punt it's a three point play.

Yes that one is, but drop kicks in general are allowed instead of place kicking, but then the regular rules still apply there just like any FG from the field or PAT.

the defense to run a turnover all the way back and almost score but get stripped a yard or two away from the goal line. Then the offense picks it up and runs backwards and gets tackled in the endzone.

Wouldn’t that be a 2 point safety?

Rummel lost to St Aug that way in about 1976.

Most likely scenario for the 6-1 holy grail is you would need the defense to run a turnover all the way back and almost score but get stripped a yard or two away from the goal line. Then the offense picks it up and runs backwards and gets tackled in the endzone.

Defense giving up a safety in that manner is probably very rare even during a regular play.

In all my years watching football, that is only the 2nd time I have ever seen that happen. The first was a 2004 Texas A&M/Texas game. I remember watching some CBS game, and there was a game break showing the play. And I never knew that could even happen at that time.
