A 1 point safety is when the team trying to score a 2-point conversion or PAT turns the ball over, the defense takes the ball out of the end zone, then gets tackled in the end zone for a safety.

I've been watching football for a long time, and I had no idea that was a thing.

Here is an example of that happening.

That’s why 6-1 final is the holy grail scorigami.

That really can't happen unless a team recovers their own fumble 98 yards behind them in their own end zone when trying to go for two or kick a PAT.

It happened in a Texas vs. Texas A&M game in the early 2000s as well. That was the first time I ever remember seeing it happen.

Most likely scenario for the 6-1 holy grail is on a PAT/2 pt you would need the defense to run a turnover all the way back and almost score but get stripped a yard or two away from the goal line. Then the offense picks it up and runs backwards and gets tackled in the endzone.

The ref was excited to get to call that . "We have an unusual ruling on the play"

I think the holy grail is a 1-0 victory in which the official actually awarded the 1 point (as opposed to the team actually executing on it).

There's precisely 0% chance this will ever happen, although it is theoretically possible.

I don’t think 1-0 is theoretically possible (barring a scoring rule change) unless I’m missing/forgetting something. A 1-point safety can only occur on a PAT/two-point attempt.

Sorry, you're of course right. I revise to a 6-1 finish in which both scores were awarded by the ref.

So 7-1 is impossible right? What about 8-1?

I guess 8-1 is possible but it involved the 6-1 happening plus a safety. So that one would be even more impossible

7-1 is impossible.

8-1 could be done with a normal safety added in.

9-1 with a field goal.

10-1 with 2 safeties.

Etc.

Anything where a team only has 1 point is gonna be very difficult.

off topic but this reminded me. When I was a Jr in HS we were playignh our big cross town rival who was exponentially better thorughout history at football. Our team was pretty good that year though and the game ended up going to overtime. Becuase of some hairbraned dumbshit rule that I can only imagine is "bc of the kiddddsss!!!" after the game was still tied after OT the officials declared the winner based on penetration. The other team had more yards accumulated in OT so they were awarded 1 extra point and the win. Boy there were some unhappy folks in that stadium ha

Happened in the Oregon-KState Fiesta bowl not long ago. The QBs would have probably been Mariota and Klien

Yep.

It last happended a couple of years ago in college IIRC. People's minds were blown.

We had a question on our football rules exam about that here in Georgia a couple of years ago.
