A boss of mine told me a story about this several years ago. He said there was a major Highway set to be built, but the local politicians pissed off Huey P somehow so he had them build the hwy. several miles outside of Alec. costing them the business. My boss had a tendency to stretch the truth so was never if this true or not. Anybody have info on this?

No clue but any historians know why neither V'burg or N'chez became bigger?

You'd think some kind of city was needed between Memphis and NO -- especially V'burg as it's also on the I-20 latitude line. yYou'd think it would have become a hub being on both the river and the RR line

Same problem with most towns up and down the river. Lots of poverty. I have a lot of family around Vicksburg and any that have got a college degree never come back. 3 or 4 generations of this wipes out a town leaving only the lower class.

Even before I-49, multiple highways passed through Alexandria. Hwy 1 and 165 for example.

Poverty is the result, not the cause.

Mu understanding was that he had them build the "Old" Mississippi bridge low enough to stop bigger ships etc from going any farther than Baton Rouge. I have also read people debunk that rumor or fact or what ever you want to believe I guess. Maybe someone else can shed a little light on that piece of history......

Because Long made the “Old Bridge” too low for major shipping to pass, forcing it to stop in BR

Alexandria barely existed at the time of the Civil War, and it was destroyed therein.

Outside of being a crossroads it was never going to be some huge center of commerce. There’s no reason for it to be. There aren’t enough people there.

Ocean going vessels weren’t making it to Ellick on the Red River regardless of bridge height in BR.

Hint: Hwy 71 + Melville

The lower bridge fact may be true as Baton Rouge is the furthest inland port on the Mississippi for seafaring ships. Supposedly Vicksburg is the furthest inland they could’ve gone

Big ships wouldn’t be going past Baton Rouge even without that bridge. The river changes a good bit above Baton Rouge.

There is a rock ledge which crosses the river just north of the "Old" bridge. It traps all the sand for miles above it.

The "Old" bridge is where it is because it didn't have to be higher than for tugs. No ship is going north of the bridge if it never were there.

I don't know about Alexandria specifically, but it is well known that Huey had roads designs change to help his friends and hurt his enemies.
