The way I look at it is that if you can do it properly where you give a two week notice. I have seen people stress over getting a better offer where they are needed immediately and can't give a two week notice. If that is the case than you explain to you current employer and tell them it is a better opportunity and I need to take it. It is business and you should treat it that way. When people get laid off alot of time it is without notice. If you can do things properly I would recommend it ,but if you can't than do what is better for you.

Congratulations on those fat seasoned battered bonuses after each shift D Dawg.

I learned early that if you don’t get fired, you’re best bet is going AWOL.

Take that time to concoct a story about an immediate family member being admitted to rehab for the third time after a very near fatal cough drop overdose and how you were begged by the entire family to help out with getting his/her kids to school, home in the afternoons, fed, etc each day until someone relieved you after you’ve checked their homework.

Would they give you two weeks notice before canning your arse?

Nope, they normally escort you out as soon as your fired. Some companies won't even let you grab personal belongings on or in your desk.

It's not that simple. I'm already on extended leave for having a child. I just wouldn't return

Just so I understand, you are on leave and have accepted another job. You are waiting out the leave and are going to quit, go to the other job, rather than work out a notice. Is that correct?

I don't think they can terminate your leave, since it's child related. If you've known about this, you could have given them a heads up. Completed "two weeks" during your leave. Was this not an option?

2 weeks notice is a polite way to give your bosses some time to work through things.

You don’t want to burn a bridge, and it gives everyone a few days to absorb you leaving.

I bet that felt good. Isn't it funny how "treat others like you want to be treated" becomes apparent like the noonday Sun when they find themselves in the same position as they so thoughtlessly put others??

Depends on the circumstances. Bottom line, you look out for yourself, don't worry about your company.

I burned a bridge by giving one week instead of two but I have zero regrets. I needed that week off.

My son does industrial electrical work. Gave his previous employer 2 weeks notice (as did one of his buddies), the Superintendent came in at lunch and told them leave now. He said I'm not paying you for two weeks if your leaving. Guess he was butthurt because my son and his buddy along with 5 others left to go work for the former Superintendent who is with another company. He offered them a good sized raise and higher per diems.

Thought it was shitty the guy ran them off but if he wanted to be left with only helpers while looking for new journeymen that's his problem.

I always keep 2 weeks+ of vacation banked in the event I have a gap. Every company I’ve worked for pays you for that time when you leave.

Additionally, you should know ahead of time if they’ll let you ride it out of walk you out.

The lesson to be learned here is: never carry on personal business on the company computer/network.

Went 8 days at my first job post-move last May and it was 7 days too many because they really pissed me off day 1. I should have told them to kick rocks 10 minutes after signing.

Instead, after working in hell for a week, I took the wife out to pizza, came home and concocted a resignation e-mail that I sent ~1030pm. I addressed it to HR, CCed my direct manager (who was supposed to go on vacation the next day, but she was instead blowing my phone up and sending me e-mails that day - and no I didn't answer or respond) and BCCed my personal email.

I'm done bowing to these businesses and their managerial overlords.

All I know is that I better have my stuff packed at my job because security is ushering me out as soon as I hit the send button on my resignation email.
No doubt. I would say the only time a true two-week notice happens if for someone retiring or an entry-level job with no access to important data.

I haven't had very many but it's not uncommon for people to change jobs a lot these days. I'll get resumes from people fairly often that are mid 30s and have had 6 or 7 different jobs already.
