IBS is like Fibromyalgia

Please don’t trivialize fibromyalgia. My cousin is a brave fibromyalgia warrior and if you saw the daily struggles he goes through just to survive you wouldn’t compare the two diseases. Believe it or not, when my cousin can’t get his fibromyalgia medicine he develops ibs along with flu like symptoms and cold sweats.

A dozen dried apricots a day. Your bathroom will look like a monster truck show passed through.

Not my story but I lived through the experience.

Can you expound on the tests?

My wife has IBS and we've eliminated a ton of foods, which has helped, but she still has random flare ups.

I have UC. This is a IBD not IBS but I know like one of the other readers talked about changing the gut biome with the use of probiotics could be a potential life changer for you. It screwed my life up for a while until I found a good gastro at Mayo Clinic.

I'm on the FODMAP diet. I hate taking pills. It's been a blessing in disguise, I've lost 30 pounds.

I’ve been having that for nearly 15 years. It definitely seems like a bullshite diagnosis because I’ve had two colonoscopy’s in that span. Last one was in 2020 and the doc said “see ya when you’re 50.”

Obviously stress and certain foods can be a problem. I’d recommend a food allergy test. I did one and found out that I’m allergic to barley, rye, wheat, and a protein found in dairy products. I had already eliminated dairy so I quit drinking beer but I still have problems.

I have a prescription for Bentyl. It works pretty well if diarrhea is your problem but it makes you feel buzzed. Which is fine if you’re just sitting around the house but problematic if you have to drive or be productive at work.

IBGard is a good one.

I also use Florastor as a probiotic. I had an IBS flare a couple years ago and it was actually my gallbladder. It's greatly improved since I had my gallbladder removed.

Get an ultrasound of your arteries below the diaphragm or get a venogram performed. These tests for vein or artery compressions.

I (37 year old male) had been getting sick randomly vomiting, shits, chills. I had to be admitted to the ER 4-5 times due to dehydration in the last three years.

My gastro doc put me through the ringer: scope, colonoscopy, gall bladder ct scan, function test you name it. They landed on IBS. I wasn't willing to accept that.

I did a gastric emptying study yesterday. Your stomach is supposed to empty in around 90 minutes. The test went on for around 3 hours and my stomach was still not emptied. My doctors think they finally found the problem.

Strict Diet, Meds, Or gastric pacemaker are my options.

I guess What I would do is get the allergy panel and explore options. I found out that I may be allergic to a number of things because I went to see an allergist through this process.

I have stress related stomach flare ups and I find Align Chewable Tablets work great to get me back in motion. My doctor actually said no reason not to keep taking them.

Edit:

Chewable not gummies, but again my doctor said there are a lot of good ones this one just works for me.

Weird that increasing fiber would help with IBS.

Doesn't help everyone, IBS seems more like a catchall when they can't figure out what is wrong with you.

I tried a lot of medications, big thing for me is diet. I learned what foods and ingredients really hit me the worst and just stay away from them. Sometimes that is hard, like tomatoes, sometimes I want pizza or pasta. Just have to have a plan if things go sideways,
