re: Why Bother recruiting High School Quarterbacks?

Every starting QB in the playoffs went to their school out of high school.
That really isn't particularly relevant. The real questions is: how many good QBs are willing to wait their turn?
Looking at the QBs mentioned, the ones that were in the CFP this year, Stroud was given the opportunity to start as a Sophomore, he didn't have to wait. Duggan and McCarthy played as freshmen. Bennett left and then came back.
Outside of those, notable QBs for this year are Daniels, Hooker, Caleb Williams and Bo Nix, all transfers.
So, to the OP's point, I think the importance of drafting a HS QB depends on a combination of your current depth and the talent level of the guy that you are bringing in. And even if you do get a generational talent that comes in and takes over in year 1, you probably lose one of the guys that he beat out.
Personally, I would bring in 1 QB per year and focus my efforts on the lines. A solid OL, the right scheme and great defense and your team is still a contender on years where you have good QB play and a favorite when you get great QB play. Having the line and the weapons in place makes you attractive to transfers if/when you need to go to the portal to get your QB.

We may not be there yet but I could see it becoming normal for the top programs to only take QBs from other schools.
It might mean having to routinely contact players while they are still at another program, which I think is against the rules, but it’s not like nobody ever breaks recruiting rules.
And I think QB won’t be the only position where this is done.

Because you sometimes get a Stetson Bennett. Nuss seems like the guy to stay through any and all adversity.
Stetson Bennett, the superstar that put up pedestrian numbers with a team a half blind, crippled midget could’ve put pedestrian numbers with.

I think they got rid of the "one time" rule and kids can transfer at will.

he was a walk on, so he pretty much was not recruited in HS
I think it’s because sometimes you get Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, etc

So you can get guys like Lawrence, Bryce Young, CJ Stroud etc…
Trevor Lawrence & Bryce Young lost 7 college games combined
4 of them to
Joe burrow
Justin fields
Hendon Hooker
Jayden Daniels

You are absolutely correct.

All the schools that aren’t in the top tier of powerhouses are going to serve as a minor league training ground for them. Then when the QB has some playing experience, or proves he’s good, they will poach him.
This is what I think will happen, too. and that being the case, I wonder ..... will we start to see some "stanardization" of offensive schemes across colleges? It'd be really nice to get a QB outta the portal that's 4th year/5th year and has been running the same offense that you run if you're a LSU recruiter, right?
or ... might we start to see "alliances" of college football programs? Maybe LSU starts recruiting directly from smaller college programs and less from high schools? Maybe Sun Belt becomes the "minor league" for SEC schools? FCS schools start getting poached for coordinators and players more maybe?

The “sport” or joy of recruiting is definitely gone. You can build a good team faster through the portal vs developing a guy for 2-3 years. Or, put it this way, the 10 guys you portal in every year will play sooner than the top 10 freshman recruits. This will repeat year after year. Pure free agent market now.

I 100% agree. There's only 1 of them on the field. No need to spend so much time and money on recruiting them. Spend your time on O/D line, DB's, and WRs.

Whomever is in charge of college football is surely studying the EPL where rich teams can simply buy the best players off the mid and lower tier teams over and over. If you combine free agency with a salary cap you can achieve parity that allows for crappy teams to bounce back quickly which is good (NFL). However, too much parity can make for too much mediocrity (MLS). Truth be told, there are no more than 10 programs that can realistically vie for CFB every year - the other 110 are not even close. TCU just referred to UGA as being on “another tier”. More changes to come y’all…. Gonna need to level the playing field

Yeah. Why did we recruit Nuss?
Idiot
Idiot

Stetson Bennett didn’t stick with Georgia until I think his junior year. He went and played JUCO before finishing his time with Georgia

Actually they lost 6 as starters. (Lawrence didn’t play the ND game in 2021)
Which is 1.2 games per season started.
Hooker lost 8 in his career at Alabama.
You want to win championships or games?
Hooker lost 8 games
Jayden has lost 4
Joe Lost 3
Fields lost 2
That’s 17 games in 7 seasons starting.

I think it’s 6, Lawrence didn’t play in regular season game vs Notre Dame in 2020.
Young other 2 loses were Bennett and Calzada

I think it was wrong after the bowl for him to say JD was the starter.
I tend to agree with this, but who knows what goes on behind the scenes.
If JD needed to hear this to be convinced to stay, probably a wise decision by BK. Don’t care what tRant thinks about it, he’s an athletic 5th year senior / leader who bought in and helped pick us up when our program was at rock bottom.

t's a valid point. Freshman QBs suck anyway. Just recruit transfers and you should be ok
This is why I’m not freaking out about Howard.

I have no idea what point you’re trying to make here
For starters I’m pretty sure you have to win games to win championships
Posted on 1/12/23 at 4:46 pm to Scatback1
I wouldn’t. I’d focus on getting one from the portal with some experience and 2 years of eligibility left.

Just go to free agency market
