You basically had a $520 per month car note for the last 4 years. But people who don't understand leasing still shite on it and somehow say owning always triumphs leasing. It all comes down to how much your vehicle depreciates in value each month. If you prefer driving a new car every few years, you are almost guaranteed to be better off leasing. ETA: I'm not picking on you or anything. I'm just using your post as an illustrative example to compare owning and leasing.

Not offended at all. I would typically keep the car for 8-10 years, I’m going to put 100k on it and move on, the Tahoe was my first dip into a used car. This Tahoe has also just had a shitload of issues.

I’m putting the money aside for a “car” but it doesn’t necessarily have to be for a car. I like the luxury of having zero note, if I don’t want to send $500 that month to the account, I don’t. If an emergency comes up, I don’t have to dip into savings or other funds.

$1000 a year is nothing it beats a car note. Tires and oil changes are gonna be on every car you own.
Tirerack.com

I usually get 75,000 on a set of tires - last company vehicle I had 95,000 miles on the same set of tires

Just watched a video by Ben Hardy (youtube auto guy) where he predicts big arse drops for under $500k luxury cars (from Rolls on down to Lincoln), trucks/SUVs over 6k lbs, EVs, and anything that's been selling over MSRP (Raptor, Civic Type R, Bronco, Wrangler) b/c of the economy, the huge markups of over the last couple years pricing too many families out on what used to be family vehicles (Suburban, Tahoe, Wagoneer, Expedition), and b/c the tax code on how you can write off a car changed.

So if OP is going to sell he needs to do it now b/c used big SUVs are about to flood the market in about 6 months.

Never been a leasing fan but after the last suv my wife got I guess I could see it. In March 2020 she bought a 2017 certified BMW X5 With 23-24k miles. I believe it was around $34k. I assume it was a lease. At any rate the window sticker was still in the glove compartment and it listed new in 2017 at $73k. She’d of owed more buying new than getting it certified preowned. Serious depreciation. Traded it in last week.

Irrelevant

A new car that cost $150k doesn’t just become worth < $40k because you drive it off the lot.

And any asset can be one of depreciating value if you pay too much for it.

But just saying any car is worth less than $40k is just wrong. You wouldn’t buy a 2020 G63 for $41k when you could turn drive it for a year sell it for over $100k?

How often do you expect to profit off a vehicle?

This is pretty fricking stupid. You drive a vehicle you bought a year ago, have it paid for and you want to by another one? Why? To truly get your value you might want to keep it a lot longer.

Why do you need another vehicle? Vehicles are nothing more than transportation. There is nothing wrong with wanting a nice vehicle, but at the same time people waste a lot of money on vehicles. If you take good care of it, you can get a good 15 years out of a vehicle..

Serious question. Been in sales and have always had a company car, therefore I haven’t actually owned my own car in over 12 years. Could get a new job where I have to buy my own car and will have a car allowance of $800/month plus mileage.

I have three kids so I need something like a Yukon, Sequoia, etc. Will I be able to write the car off in any way? Or because I’m reimbursed I won’t be able to? Further, I’m reading about you all saying these big family cars about to drop in price… when is that expected? I wouldn’t mind holding off and getting a used SUV if that’s the case. The casual browsing I’ve been doing online makes me want to puke—50k for Yukons with 100k miles on them.

You’re going to have to claim that as income, I think. The mileage won’t be written off since your employer is paying you for it.

It’s a Chevy, so the wheels falling off should be the least of his concerns.

You should be able to manage with something smaller.

I currently have a Traverse as my work car and no, I cannot manage with smaller. Between my work supplies, a stroller, toting an extra kid to practices, two big car seats? No, I need bigger. I’ve had both sizes as my husband had a Yukon XL. The Yukon XL was the right size for the ages/activities of my kids+my work crap.

That’s what I’m afraid of. Which is why I was following up asking about the big SUVs Allegedly dropping in price soon, as someone mentioned above.

I don’t need the newest or nicest but I certainly need reliable and non problematic. I’ve seen some used Armadas with low mileage for relatively good prices—40-45k. When I looked around on the googles it showed very mixed reviews on them. Thought Nissan was a reliable brand?
