Let’s Talk Cocktails

I don’t recall a thread dedicated to the cocktail, so figured I’d start one up for all the at home mixologists to have some discussion, share what’s in their glasses, and— in typical TD fashion— shite on what others are serving up.
I felt like a gin drink this evening with the warm up, so I’m starting with a Negroni, which is equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth, garnished with an orange swath.
Cheers!

Making daiquiris with an 8 year old El Dorado Demerara rum.
2 Oz rum
.75 Oz simple
.75 Oz fresh lime juice
Shaken with lots of ice and strained into frosted glass. Love this drink.

These days I usually have a nice shaken whiskey sour using the honey simple syrup I keep on hand and a local bourbon from a distillery called Dread River.

Nice! I love a good daiquiri.
Next is a Boulevardier, since pretty much everything was already out. The Boulevardier is essentially a Negroni, but subbing bourbon for the gin. I like a higher gravity bourbon to balance out the Campari. Rare Breed or OF 1920 are great choices.
-1-1/4 oz Rare Breed
-1 oz Campari
-1 oz Carpano Antica
Garnish with orange swath

Just got the cocktail codex. Have their other boom Death & Co.
Really great exploration of their thesis that there are only 6 cocktails. Everything else is just a variant but they get really into the nitty gritty of each drink and it’s variations.

I love a good Old Fashion, but never think to make one at home.
I’m really just here to compliment your glasses- my parents have a set similar to those with their initial engraved, and they are beautiful.

Paper Plane. Loving this cocktail and right up there with an Old Fashion for me.
3/4 ounce bourbon (I use a high quality bourbon and double up to 1 1/2 ounce)
3/4 ounce Aperol
3/4 ounce Amaro Nonino Quintessentia
3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed (I've also used fresh squeezed orange juice)
I chill a coup glass and use bullet ice in my small shaker. Vigoursly shake for 20 seconds and strain into chilled glass. Garnish with a wedge cut in the shape of wings.

I could get on board with that, but the differences within those variations can be pretty substantial.

I’m going to guess a few:
Martini
Sour
Old Fashioned
Highball
Maybe daiquiri?

Old Fashioned
The martini
Daiquiri
Sidecar
Whiskey highball
Flip
It’s not that there are only these 6 drinks, it’s that every drink is ultimately in one of these families.

6 oz of Fresca sparkling soda water
Juice of 1/2 a lime

The Codex is a helluva treatise on the cocktail. One has to suspend their prejudices about what they think they know about cocktails and read with an open mind. Death$ Co. is responsible for much of the cocktail resurgence over the last few years. Very innovative. As BlackenedOut said, those 6 are the first In families from which all other cocktails come from. There are hundreds of recipes in the Codex. It’s a very informative read.

There are many cocktail bars I like, but Death & Co. is one I like the most.

Vodka and Fresca is my go-to summer on the beach drink. I never thought of adding bourbon to it. I'll be rectifying that this afternoon.

quote:I used to make them by the book. Over time, it's evolved for various reasons. Since doing whole 30 several times, I just can't stand too much sweet. These days, I skip the sugar/simple syrup, and have replaced it with LaCroix. I use both orange and Angostura bitters. I may or may not add a cherry and a little juice. Same for orange slice.
I love a good Old Fashion, but never think to make one at home.

Was given a bottle of blood orange italian soda around Christmas. Made a blood orange, vodka drink with fresh rosemary and a lime. It was a hit! Very refreshing!

Campari is so versatile I keep a bottle at all times. Negroni when I want to get fancy otherwise Campari and soda with lemon.
we’ve been drinking a “kinda” old fashioned lately which I like a lot
half a satsuma, squeeze of honey and a couple small splashes of cherry syrup muddled in a glass. Pour of bourbon, splash of water, ice
