All my lines are in slab. Have faucet covers on the hose bibs outside, and I double insulated by backflow preventer on my irrigation line.

All plumbing in my home is in conditioned space. Turned off the shutoff to the two outdoor spigots and drained them yesterday. Only concern is the main from the well. Left a heating bulb on in the well house and periodically running water so it doesn’t freeze up from well house to home.

So far so good.

No problems.

Some water lines run through an attached, but not climate controlled, utility room. I put a small heater in the room. Outside faucets heavily wrapped. The well also services some livestock water troughs, but we cut that water off.

House has some pier and beam but is mostly slab.

Imagine how simple it is to avoid a frozen pipe yet ton of people going to get them anyway

We trickled ours and still got frozen pipes today. Absolutely no water to any faucet or toilet in the house right now. No visible frozen pipes.

The main to the house runs through a wall right next to a large back door. Just found out there is no insulation in that small part of the wall (we’ve been here two years and not had this issue yet). We have space heaters right now on both sides of the wall to try to warm things up if that’s where it’s at (we can’t see anything).

It’s possible that it could be outside of the house. Called the plumber and he won’t come out until it thaws or something bursts (his words).

Pex won’t bust

Pex that has been exposed to sunlight for a decade or more can in fact burst. I had to repair a leak on one of my Aunt's exposed uninsulated water lines outside her house 2 years ago after it froze solid then thawed.

Was hell finding it at the time, but SharkBite fitting for the win.

All good. Got down to 7 overnight but houses here are built accordingly and I insulated my outdoor sink well.

Was 14 here in NW Houston before sunup. Only 20 now so got a ways to go to thaw out and find any damage. May not thaw out today.

You still need to drip hot water to keep that tankless water heater on the side of your house from freezing up.

Pex won’t bust but can still freeze and leave you with frozen water pipes, right?

During the February 2021 polar vortex, even experienced plumbers still falsely believed that PEX is immune to bursting when frozen. When confronted with these real world failures they have raised any number of mistaken explanations ranging from “it wasn’t the ice, someone must have used a heat gun on it” to “that must be a different kind of PEX, my PEX will expand better.”

The fact is that PEX bursts when it freezes, just like copper and CPVC. No material can overcome the incredible power and pressure involved in freezing. The only reliable way to prevent a pipe from bursting when frozen, is to prevent the pipe freezing in the first place.

watched a video yesterday w a plumber talking about this. Even in attic, pipes can be exposed to UV which damages. He was covering all pipes with the insulation wrap also to protect from uv, not just temps.

I have a frozen line to my toilet in the master. I have a soffit vent that runs the length of my house and I think there is a 90 on the exterior wall that is completely exposed in the attic. Going to have to do some exploring to get to it.

1950s house with galvanized pipe in the attic.

PEX with a tankless water heater. Water is fine, but no hot water. All my pipes are in insulated walls. Wtf?

G2G so far here in West Central Georgia.

Now just have to worry about a tree that is literally coming out of the ground that is in my neighbors yard but leaning towards our house.
