I’m genuinely curious. What’s the appeal?

why do you care about what other people like?

I'm genuinely curious.

Not likely.

The op question is a legitimate question to ask. When one doesn’t find something appealing it is interesting to find out why others do.
It’s called gaining new perspective, something that cretins never do.

Visual effects, it's a summer blockbuster being released around Xmas.

James Cameron showing off advancements in 3D technology and CGI is literally the only reason. It is 'check this out' and it passes that in flying colors. Outside of that, no reason. I've seen this film multiple times in different variations.

My wife likes going to the theater. She doesn’t give a shite what is playing.

I’m not interested, but there really isn’t anything worth a crap out in the theaters and many people have time off between now and New Years

Sometimes people just want to go and relax for a few hours and be entertained

same reason people go to Imax shows at a museum. Sometimes its okay to go watch shite that looks really cool on a big screen. There is a reason Fast and the Furious is continually a billion dollar franchise.

Well, let's see.

Bright primary colors, tons of CG and video game looking fantasy environments, blue people, flying dinosaur thingies, overwrought music, piss-poor ripped off storylines...

Highest Grossing movies 2010s

1 Avengers: Endgame
2 Star Wars Episode VII
3 Avengers: Infinity Wars
4 Jurassic World
5 The Lion King (live action)
6 The Avengers
7 Furious 7
8 Frozen 2
9 Avengers: Age of Ultron
10: Black Panther

Millennials grew up on video games both on their consoles and with their movies. Avatar is basically another video game.

Imagine spending your time on a message board and snarkily wondering why people on there care about what other people like. That’s similar to going to a football game and bitching to everyone there that football sucks and wondering why they care about it

Have you never seen a movie in 3D at the theater? It's quite an experience and I would expect this Avatar to be very visually pleasing.

I hate the Polar Express, I think it's just a boring, lame Christmas movie. But the first time I saw it was at an IMAX theater and the spectacle of 3D made it a much more entertaining experience despite being a story I don't like.

If I don't end up seeing it in theaters, asking me why I watch Avatar at home would probably be a valid question. I'll probably end up asking myself that same question halfway through.

Like the first one, seeing it in theaters probably blows away the home TV/sound system experience.
