We have idiots in our government who manage the public school systems.

Once the idiots in the public school system make the call, the people in the private system blindly follow along.

how much liability does a school have? no one seems to know. Everything is done out of an abundance of caution, except actually educating students it seems. Test scores still suck, kids still seem unprepared for the next chapter or challenge, and schools keep worrying about litigation. Wish they'd put as much effort into educating as they do risk management.

I remember when I was in school if it rained hard and had bad weather, it just rained hard with bad weather.

Seriously, I remember one year there was a hurricane and there was no word of school getting canceled. It wasn't going to be a direct hit or anything, it wasn't even a thought, but it hit a little closer than first thought and within an hour or two at school they announced it was going to be canceled. It was storming by that time. The weather was still kind of bad that night and people figured they would cancel school again because there was still a high chance of thunderstorms and bad weather.

They didn't. We wet to school and it was storming, by recess there were clear skies.

Everyone always says “they will get sued”

Can anyone point to all these lawsuits? Would be almost impossible to win a case against a school for having school….

I'm not saying they will get sued.

i'm saying they close out of fear of being sued.

like i said, the only times schools closed when i was kid was when it snowed and for hurricanes.

A few years ago ascension parish did not cancel prior to school starting and decided to have early dismissal as a tornado outbreak was beginning.

Thirty minutes after kids were sent home, a tornado touched down near my daughter’s school, Oak Grove Primary, and severely damaged Gold’s Gym and other businesses located nearby.

I’m okay with cancellations, better to err on the side of caution. Also, what a boneheaded decision to not have them shelter in place.

Well since there is a risk of a traffic accident anytime you are on the road then let’s just cancel school altogether.

We wouldn’t want to risk anyone getting sued just for an education.
