re: Is A Christmas Story the worst Christmas movie?

quote:It first hit pay cable in '84 (out of season). It was one of those movies that people discovered and loved on HBO and The Movie Channel (in the infancy of VHS rentals). Then in Christmas of '85, HBO started putting it in their holiday rotation. In the late 80's/early 90's, TBS started having a special showing of it each year. That's probably when it really hit the national zeitgeist. Then in the late 90's TBS started the 24 hour loop which led to it being cool to hate the move (See: OP's attention whoring).
funny thing. I have absolutely no recollection of this film ever having been in the theaters. In fact, I have no recollection of it even existing until about five or 10 years after it came out.

I've never understood the Christmas Story thing.

and then people my age just pretended at some random point that it was a classic.

When were you born, 80-85? Movie came out in 1983, so if people your age were going to take a liking to it for it to achieve that cult status, that would happen until the 90s at the earliest, which goes back to my 1st point, I'm not sure what part of that is so difficult to understand.

I'm actually surprised to see the movie get any kind of "hate." Certainly, in the long list of Christmas movies, it ranks likely in the top 10 of best all time as opposed to the worst of all time.
It's just a solid movie about a time in life when kids could be kids. The day dreaming, dealing with bullies, the desire for the perfect gift under the tree. There's the caring and supportive mother, and the father who while gruff also means well and does dopey things.
It's a movie told from the narrator's perspective while he painfully misses his childhood days: both the good and the bad. I mean if you had a shitty childhood then you likely don't have fond memories to reflect back on. Sounds like quite a few posters here did, and that sucks.
Also people like the movie because it's funny. Tongue stuck to the frozen pole, the santa saying "you'll shoot your eye out", really the entire santa at the mall scene, and the duck getting its head lopped off at the Chinese restaurant.
As far as parents today "taking over Christmas" from their kids...something I've personally never seen, that has nothing to do with debating the merits of this movie.
TL, DR: Sorry your childhood sucked, A Christmas Story is a solid movie for the season.

Fair enough.
But the op thinks it is worse than Home Alone 3 and Madea's Christmas. . .which basically means his opinion is shite
Correct. There are undoubtedly far worse Christmas movies out there than ACS.

I submit Santa Clause 3: Escape Clause and Bad Santa 2.

Of course you "don't understand" because you're a contrarian about everything.

This is also not true

Also, a lot of the most intense "contrarian" points I've made in history on this board turned out to be 100% true.
How is ole Game of Thrones received on here, these days?

I think this may be the key factor. For me, that movie brings me back to being a kid. My dad was similar to the movie dad. Except, it wasn't the boiler he was an expert at, but cars. I remember waking up christmas morning, amazed at all the presents. Someone being chosen as santa and handing out the presents. Opening the presents, passing out in a pile of wrapping paper. The turkey being baked in the oven.
The idea that as a kid, every event is some major event to you, but you'll have like 5 major events happening every day, and you switch gears in an instant to thinking of something else. Day dreaming about what you want for christmas. It's THE Christmas movie for me.

It's not the best, but it is far from being the worst. I've always liked the movie, but then again I've always had a fascination with all things from the 1930's, 40's, and 50's so anything that takes place in that time period is in my wheelhouse. I thought the new movie was pretty good, too.
The old man is the best character in the bunch. I see a bit of my old man, my grandfather, and my uncles in him.

Someone didn't get an Official Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas as a kid, and it shows.

It's weird, like Philly fans throwing snowballs at Santa.
Complaints about nostalgia? Well no one here grew up in the 40s.
So our nostalgia about loving it as a kid? Most people didn't even see it until they were older. It was not a hit when released... Target audience for nostalgia was too old. Fell under the radar...
Its just a nice endearing funny movie that IS about Christmas and not a hostage takeover of the Nakatomi Tower.

’ve only ever seen bits and pieces throughout the 24 hour marathons to make up the entire movie
In college went to my grandma's house for christmas with the whole family, was feeling slightly hung over so i dozed off on the couch while the marathon was on, woke up and saw that the movie was only a few scenes ahead, so I thought I'd only napped for a few minutes. I closed my eyes and nodded back off, opened my eyes again movie was only another scene ahead. Still thinking I'd only been napping for a few minutes further. Mom sees me awake and asks "if I feel ok?", I said "yeah, just needed to take a quick 15 minute nap." She said "15 minute nap?, you've been asleep for over 4 hours." total mind frick.

I might be one of the few that saw this in the theaters. It's ok. Not the best, not the worst. I am a Christmas Vacation guy myself.
