I've never understood the Christmas Story thing. It didn't exist when I was a kid and then people my age just pretended at some random point that it was a classic.

Pretty much the same for me too. But it has kinda grown on me.

You’d have to ignore a mountain of truly awful movies to say that one is the “worst.” It’s a kinda cute, kinda cool Christmas time warp with some very memorable scenes and moments. It does seem to go out of its way to portray the father as an emotional incompetent boob. The mall Santa scene and some of the daydream scenes are good.

Does it? I mean, yes, the father is a comedic figure in many respects. He's the bread winner, and has his own issues, but the movie shows that while he may not necessarily be completely continuously present in everyone's lives, he does love and care for his family. He's the one who surprised Ralphie with the BB gun after all. He also saves the day after the turkey is ruined by taking charge and taking everyone to the Chinese restaurant, which creates a find memory for Ralphie.

The movie is a nostalgic capture of post war America after WWII.

Close.

Based upon a calendar shown in the movie, the date of the decoder ring Ralphie received in the mail, the presence of Randy's zeppelin toy and the Wizard of Oz characters at the department store, and the makes/models of the cars, folks have determined that the movie was set in Christmas 1939 or 1940 BEFORE we entered WWII just under a year later.

I didn’t say or imply that every single scene cast him in a negative light, but between the furnace meltdowns, the leg lamp boobery and meltdown, getting owned by Bumpas’ dogs, and on and on, definitely much more negative than positive.

Young GenX through Millennials have a weird obsession with nostalgia. It's ruined so much, Christmas being #1.

Published in Playboy magazine in the 1960's. The narrator in the movie is the author of the story, Jean Shepherd.

quote:

Hugh Hefner had a role in bringing A Christmas Story to life
A Christmas Story is based on a novel by Jean Shepherd called In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Originally, it started out as a radio show, but then Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and author Shel Silverstein encouraged Shepherd to adapt and publish his stories in print. The short stories were later published as an ongoing series in Playboy magazine.

That is interesting.

I was an adult before I ever saw the movie. I like it but I love all things vintage so a story about vintage Christmas is in my wheelhouse.

Nostalgia (of a childhood many didn't even have watching this movie) is why ACS is popular.

ACS didn't ruin Christmas, the underlying disease (over-valuing nostalgia) did. ACS is just a symptom of the disease.

It sounds a lot like you're saying that 80s kids are nostalgic for the 1940s. Is that what you're saying?

I always saw my generation's(X) love of things like The Three Stooges, Little Rascals, Tom & Jerry, Looney Toons, etc as an ability to appreciate things that came before our time...unlike today's generation, a lot of which won't even watch a movie from the 90s.

I just watched it for the first time. We have read some of his other short stories in PB and really enjoyed.

Cannot stand all the little boys screaming like little girls. Just ear-piercing “WWWHHHHAAAAAAHHHH” recurring every 10 minutes throughout that entire movie. All while we’re trying to enjoy some peace and quiet inside the house during a break from work and school. Saving Private Ryan has less stressful noise than ACS.
