George R.R. Martin down to his last 500 pages on Winds of Winter

By now, fans of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire books — the novels adapted into the HBO Max series Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon — are used to mildly exhausting updates on his progress on the 11-years-overdue next novel in the series, The Winds of Winter. An episode of the Comedy Central series Stephen Colbert’s Tooning Out The News has the latest from Martin, who says — sounding fairly sincere about it — that he’s written around 1,100 to 1,200 pages of the book so far, and just has “another 400, 500 pages” to go.
Martin has frequently expressed that he’s exasperated with fans and interviewers constantly nagging him about his slow progress on The Winds of Winter, which keeps getting sidelined as he works on other HBO shows and projects. But here, he seems to at least try to force a sense of humor about the whole thing, with some awkward laughs at the roasting. What he doesn’t address is why he doesn’t, as Patterson blithely suggests, separate Winds of Winter into releasable sections, given that a 1,700-page book isn’t really a physical possibility. “Problem solved!” Patterson says. “You break down the 1,100 pages into three books… You submit one book per year, they’ll be happy, and suddenly you’ll be ahead of schedule!” Martin just laughs.

So, at this pace, we can expect A Dream of Spring around 2035 or thereabouts?
Nice.
Nice.

Probably means another 2 years for every 100 pages he has left.

Still has to go through editing and revisions...

I dont even care anymore, and I suspect a lot of other people are in the same boat. This is a book that I would have pre-ordered a hardback of, full stop a few years ago. Now I can pretty much say with certainty that I'm going to wait to read all the inevitably terrible reviews it's going to get, then probably eventually buy a used copy somewhere. The zeitgeist has moved on, and GRRM has only himself to blame.

didnt read the books myself....
do the book fans even care anymore at this point? genuine question.

I've completely given up on ever seeing A Dream of Spring.
And remember this--he hasn't even conclusively stated that there will only be two more novels. It was supposed to be three, then five, and here we are waiting on book six.
GRRM will die before he finishes the story.

I should’ve put a sarcasm thing at the end of my post…
I don’t expect for it to ever be done . But the fact it’s been 11 years and he still claims he has 500 pages left is such a frick you to the fans .

Not near as much as I used to. It is hard to keep up the interest in the story with a decade or more between books.
He has released the novellas and all the world-building stuff like World of Ice and Fire, and Fire and Blood, but there has only been one central ASOIAF novel released since 2005.

Who cares? I read all the books and won't be reading this one. Also, why is this on movie/tv board?

Oddly enough I watched Logan Lucky for the first time last weekend and was laughing so hard at that GOT scene from the prisoners . That was hilarious and caught me totally off guard

For real.
At least Scott Lynch has absolutely crippling anxiety that he finally got under control.
These two are just lazy fricks.
Martin will never finish Ice and Fire...and I'm ok with it.

Same.
I'm holding out for MArtin having a massive coronary and dying, then Brandon Sanderson stepping in and finishing GoT.ANd doing so in about 6 months. AND improving it.

Meh. I'll read it as soon as it comes out but I fully expect him to die before the final book comes out. Not saying that in a mean way, but just reality of him being a very overweight old man who has taken over a decade to write this book and cares more about side projects theses days. He will be the same way with book 7 and he won't live another 12 years and he isn't releasing rights for anyone else to finish it. When he dies, A Song of Ice and Fire dies.
