All depends the game, budget, and shot distance. I hunt with a .25-06 in South Texas, and shoot a 120 grain Remington cor-lokt. I have a Remington 700 with a Bushnell 3X9X40 scope. Great gun and fairly inexpensive.

.260 Remington, 7mm08, .280 Remington, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag bolt actions
Tikka is very good for the price.
I have always loved Remington model 700's but reports are that they are not what they used to be.
Winchester Model 70 bolt guns are very nice as well.
Bergara is gaining in popularity and are also very good choice.

Somewhere in between these options, but bigger than the .223.
I shoot a .270.

Caliber is the deadest horse that’s ever been beat when it comes to killing a deer. If there was anything to learn from the last two years, it’s that .308 ammo is going to be on the shelf when nothing else is.
Ruger American and savage axis are the standards for extremely solid budget rifles. Tikka is the next rung on the price ladder that will shooter better than you can. With modern machining it’s really hard to go wrong nowadays, most everyone makes a good shooting rifle. Backfire on YouTube does reviews of a bunch in different price points, it typically will come down to the features you like (threaded for a brake, detachable mag vs hinged floorplate, weight and barrel length, etc).

Yep, my buying spree last year, this was my main consideration. Cheaper, available ammo.

I have found that parts for Remington guns made pre bankruptcy have become hard to get. They sold all the parts inventory to some outfit in Florida and they don't know what they have in inventory has been my experience.
You can't buy parts for a 20 year old rifle from the current "Remington" company.
I have a 1983 700 ADL .270 that is a fine rifle and I have not had to get any parts but I also have a 1987 1187 shotgun I needed a part for and could not find it.
I bought my son a 7mm-08 Browning when he was in high school and it has killed several deer and still looks and firs like brand new. It is probably 12 o 13 years old now.

Looking at 223 and 30-06 bolt actions
I’d get a 308 if it’s going to be a strictly deer rifle

A lot of these people are shooting too much gun. I shoot a .17 HMR and have killed every deer I have shot. Unless you are in west Texas taking 500 yard shots, a 223 is not needed.
I hope this is a joke and you were trolling.

Since you’ll be deep in the woods, I’m guessing your shots will be less than 100 yards? If so, 30-30 is excellent.
If you’ll be routinely shooting further than 100 yards, I like the 270 and 30-06.
My Weatherby Vanguard in 270 is my favorite gun and often drops them in their tracks with a 150 grain bullet.

Marlin iron-sighted lever action in 30/30 or 44mag. Find ammo anywhere and will lay down a deer under 150 yds.

I’ve not shot a bunch of high end rifles. But I am really impressed w the Axis. I put the next from lowest price Leupold on it and it is a tack driver
Son killed a deer w it yesterday
Bought 7mm08 because I have one already. If I didn’t I would’ve bought a .308.

Someone once said on here 30-06 might not always be the right answer but it’s never the wrong answer. True statement

I think that’s an old quote from someone like Townson Whelen or Jack O’Connor, or someone from their time.

My suggestion is to buy a rifle in a caliber that will alway be easy to find.
The last few years taught us that very important lesson.
In no order: 6.5cm, .308, .30-06, .270
Those were pretty much always available. It's easier to find most ammo now but still some difficulties. I did see one poster recommend .257 roberts. While it's a great round, you have no chance of finding ammo in that caliber any time soon. You would need to reload and have get brass.
