7-2-0 Florida State vs 7-1-1 LSU for a slot in the Orange Bowl. Loser to the Gator Bowl.To Florida State's chagrin AD Bob Brodhead turned down CBS' request to move the game to the afternoon.

There couldn't have been 5 oranges left at EBR grocery stores.#12 LSU pounded #7 Florida State 55-21 as oranges and fog covered Tiger Stadium.

What a night. I was there. Grocery stores were calling the athletic department to give them a heads up about all the oranges being bought,

I graduated from LSU in August 1982. I listened to the game on WWL from San Antonio, TX.

Me too! I remember being a Boy Scout usher for that game too. And then there were the games we had sections close to where the Golden Girls were. I’ll never forget those games either!

I was there in the SEZ. The smell of oranges and the dense fog hanging heavy in the air.

QB Alan Risher, RBs Dalton Hilliard and Garry James, WR Eric Martin, and TE Malcolm Scott.

DL Leonard Marshall and Ramsey Dardar, LBs Rydell Melancon and Al Richardson, DBs Liffert Hobley and Jeffrey Dale.

There was so much fog that crept in, you could barely see players on the field.

I was 11 and listened on the radio with my brother, grandparents and cousin. Our parents must have gone out.

My brother and I would've killed to be there - no TV but had Hawthorn describing the thick fog and oranges raining down.
I thought I wanted to be a journalist or sports reporter and typed up notes real-time on grandma's manual typewriter. Wish I had that "story."

Also wish I could forget the following two games.

I was there, it was wild. And the fog rolling in late in the game just made it legendary.

I consider that game as the high point of my time in the student section.

I remember when Lou Holts was coaching (I believe at Arkansas ?). The fans were throwing Oranges on the field when they won. Postgame, he said “I’m glad we weren’t going to the Gator Bowl”.

That was the last game when they rented out the stadium chairs with the metal frames and canvas covering. I spent a lot of the fourth quarter watching behind me from my seat in the first few rows of the west lower bowl. People were throwing oranges from the west upper and not all of them made the field. A couple of the seat cushions got thrown too but none came close to me. The students who rushed the field after the game and went to the goal posts got beat down by police for their trouble.

I was a freshman at LSU and was in student section. That's when student section was almost 25% of the lower bowl. I was close to the field and got pelted with oranges. I remember being cold and sticky leaving the stadium.
