Annual vet visit for my 11 yr old Jack Russell. Vet says he needs to go under for teeth cleaning / extraction to “not cause problems in the future.”

Here’s the estimate range dependent on the # of extractions. Location: Houston

Dog is in excellent health. Anyone know if this is normal?

Get a second opinion. My dogs go to Neartown.

I do feel like the vets in Houston rip you off though. One of my dogs gets chronic ear infections and they won’t prescribe her medicine (the same kind each time) unless she sees the vet and does a culture ($130ish). It’s infuriating… so maybe don’t go to Neartown

Didn’t agree to shite- that’s why it’s an estimate.

They offered 10% if pay in full. Would not agree to a cap.

Sounds like your vet is late on his yacht payment.

Normal? What do you charge per hour for your services? Cause I guarantee you I can find someone cheaper and More expensive. Call other vets and ask them for a quote for the same procedures.

And “not causing problems in the future” is a
Legit reason for recommending the procedures.

Imagine the estimate if you had to be placed under general anesthesia to have your teeth worked on.

No, that is within the range. I had the samerecently done to my good girl and it was $1,500.00.

She looks like a sweetheart - - pay the money and take care of that little girl. She has given you a shite load of love for 11 years and the truth is, we do not deserve dogs.

That's about $900-$1600 more than what i'd be willing to pay for my dog.

id need some more information. It sounds form this workup that he needs at least 2 teeth extracted, maybe more.

most of the cost of the charges seem reasonable but there is about 500 dollars worth of costs that dont fit.

i would ask for clarification on the idexx geriatric profile, this sounds like blood work which they are already doing in house (chemistry 17 and hematology, plus others)

they are also doing a full series dental radiographs, but then also quoting later a radiograph full series plus consult with specialist that adds quite a bit of costs.

what else are they concerned about? this doesnt sound like a work up for a dental cleaning with visible issues only.

Is dog teeth cleaning a required/suggested thing now? My MIL has it done for her dog and suggested it to us. I think it's a little crazy to put them to sleep for a deep clean if there are no issues. Ours chews on bones and we brush her teeth when we bathe her. Shouldn't need much more than that, right?
