Looks like the fighter plane didn’t see the B17 coming at him from below while he was banking left.

Loss of life is obviously tragic and the most important thing, but the loss of one of the last still flying B17s is sad too.

The smaller plane (P-51??) was in a hard banked turn and the underside of his plane was possibly obscuring the view. Not sure who controls airspace at an airshow - ATC or the show operators - but someone should have been spotting and radioed to help keep those planes apart, both altitude and across the ground.

Whenever I watch YouTube videos about these old craft that are still flying, I’m always a bit alarmed at the age of the pilots.

Unless you’re the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds there should not be 2 planes in the air at the same time.

Damn…that sucks.

There aren’t that many vintage B-17s left now.

Man that sucks.
I've seen Texas Raiders flying on several occasions. It was based out of a general aviation airport near Tomball, TX.

Looking at multiple videos I was trying to see what happened
to the smaller plane. That thing just disintegrated in mid air.

Those on the B-17 had maybe three seconds to live after being struck. Hardly even time enough to understand what just happened before the ground took them out. At least their terror was as brief as possible. Very sad this happened.

There are barely a half-dozen or so B-17s still flying of less than 50 complete aircraft still in existence. I saw one flying in St. Louis about 10 years ago.
