20% Tennessee voters vote no to abolishing slavery
Wow.
Please keep it a civil discussion.

Tennessee has officially banned all forms of slavery. Voters on Tuesday approved a ballot measure that removes language allowing slavery and involuntary servitude as forms of punishment for those convicted of crimes. The measure passed with 79.54% of the votes, according to the Secretary of State's office.
Wow.
Please keep it a civil discussion.

Time for some common sense white supremacy laws

People like to have others do the work for them.

Is this slavery in reference to sentencing criminals to hard labor?
Seems a bit disingenuous to label that blankly as slavery without a fuller explanation.

20% of people voted no on some virtue signaling bullshite. Should have been higher.

Why are they even voting on this in 2022?

Yeah I think that means that they are now required to pay inmates doing hard labor. Pay em a dollar a week and they’re good.

The measure amended Article I, Section 33 of the Tennessee Constitution, which states that "slavery and involuntary servitude are forever prohibited in this state – except as punishment for a person who has been duly convicted of crime." The new amendment removes the language allowing for these punishments.

The section will now read: "Slavery and involuntary servitude are forever prohibited. Nothing in this section shall prohibit an inmate from working when the inmate has been duly convicted of a crime."

Those voting "No" are simply wanting the state to remain consistent with the Federal government.
According to section one of the 13th Amendment:
According to section one of the 13th Amendment:
quote:
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Well, it failed in Louisiana so there’s that. Hell, even the black author of the bill renounced it.

They should have voted no on slavery the first time around

This amendment would change the current language in article I, section 33 of the Tennessee Constitution, which says that slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a person who has been duly convicted of crime, are forever prohibited in this State. The amendment would delete this current language and replace it with the following language: “Slavery and involuntary servitude are forever prohibited. Nothing in this section shall prohibit an inmate from working when the inmate has been duly convicted of a crime.”
Nice try libcuck but it has to do with prison sentences. We had something similar on the ballot Louisiana

Dems are sneaky people and love keeping AA’s on the plantation.

That's a misleading headline. The amendment prohibited inmates from being subject to forced labor as punishment. It was already unconstitutional so really a moot point.

Gonna be hilarious when some slapdick attorney takes up a case arguing that prison sentences violate the state constitution now.

Yep, had to explain why this was nonsense to my wife when we were on the way to the poll yesterday

This is 100% the exact reason why these bills are introduced. They're completely feckless and irrelevant pieces of legislation designed to garner outrage from morons and midwits. LA had the exact same CA and it's fricking retarded.
