Wow!!!! Did not realize slavery was so unpopular. Keep trying, maybe in 2 or 3 cycles this will change.

The amendment prohibited inmates from being subject to forced labor as punishment. It was already unconstitutional so really a moot point.

They get around this by paying them .50 an hour to do the work.

Seems fair considering the free housing, food and medical care.

Well what about community service as part of your sentence?

Still perfectly fine, as are prison work programs.

ETA: In fact all inmates that are able to work are still required to.

TN Amendment 3

quote:

Work programs

Officials say the ballot measure would not do away with prison work and education programs, job training or community service time that may be given as part of a sentence to someone convicted of a crime.

The Tennessee Department of Correction supports the language change, after getting the second sentence added into the wording -- "Nothing in this section shall prohibit an inmate from working when the inmate has been duly convicted of a crime."

"We don't think the intent was to prohibit the department from requiring inmates to work or participate in programs," prisons spokeswoman Dorinda Carter said by email. "We preferred to have that clarified so that there was no question about the intent."

Carter said all inmates who are able to work or go to school are required to do so.

She noted it is considered a disciplinary matter when inmates refuse to work. That can result in dismissal from the job or program, loss of pay and loss of recreational electronic devices such as television and radio.

Tennessean here. Voted no. Get punished for a crime? I’m fine with you being forced to work without pay as part of the punishment.

It did make me laugh that on the ballot summary it said “amendment 3: ban slavery:no”. Not exactly a clear representation of the actual bill.

Amazing how one man (Trump) has managed to completely obliterate civility in this country.

Civility amongst different political affiliations died long before trump. He’s just the first national Republican to encourage (at least not discourage) his supporters to fight back.

Hell, I voted for that hooker peeing bastard, twice!

He really did, but of course you can't say it here because then you will get accused of not liking him because of "mean tweets".

It will be interesting to see how the Republican primaries for President unfold with Trump and DeSantis are running against each other.

If the majority of Republicans vote for Trump over DeSantis then there is no hope. DeSantis would beat Biden. People either love Trump or hate him with a passion so more people would go out to make sure they vote against him.

Its amazing people can't see that Trump only cares about himself. He holds rallies every weekend just because the people who like him will attend and he gets off by hearing people chant his name.. While he does that stupid dance where he looks like he is jerking off ghost.

Apparently the people who introduced the amendment said to vote no on it because they fricked up the language on it so bad.

I didn't see anything about that. A few state legislators (not the sponsors) opposed it because they said it implied that slavery has been legal up until now.

ITT: a bunch of people who can’t read and did not research what is actually being voted on. Louisiana had a similar amendment put forward, and it failed.

So how does this change anything? It seems like this is what was going on before.

I was posting on this board before trump and it's the same, so is Twitter. Trump being off twitter hasnt made it less mean. And it wasnt less mean before 2016.

Thats what you get with anonymity.

It just shows how mature some of you are to blame one guy that was around for 4 years on every little thing.
