That's the best thing I've seen on here in a while. Thank you for sharing.

My dad was also 1st Air Cav, but a little later. I was born 9 months after he got home.

If you want to really feel good about this country, which is hard to do today with all the leftists' attacks on patriotism, go spend some time at the Vietnam Wall. There are 17,000+ heroes' names there. When you hear TAPS being played...there is almost always someone playing it...you will really understand what it means to be an American; with pride.

My grandpa used to talk about being in the war as in where he went. He was stationed mostly in Italy, but he never once talked about the war itself. It was as if his mind had two different views from the war. There was the places he went and things he saw (that didn't involve war), but then there was this whole other part of it he never spoke a word about.

And to the OP, this is pretty damn cool.

Cool story!

I’m halfway through the book The World Played Chess about an author being given the journal from someone he used to know who was in Vietnam.

It’s really good! Wish I knew more about that war, sounds awful.

Great story.

Also, the French photojournalist had more balls than most on this board. Me included.

Outstanding post. Thanks for sharing.

Can’t help the camera geek in me, but it looks like the reporter used Leica cameras in the field.

Real men back then. I am thankful for your dad’s service.

I’m sure the pansies these days would complain about them being too rough with the prisoner of war.

You can tell by the expression on his face, that baw is just ready to get that damn patrol over and get the hell back to the base. He’s fed up with it haha.

ETA: also to OP’s dad, TYFYS!

Awesome Story and thanks to your Dad.

Thats Catherine Leroy, she is a very famous photographer who passed away in 2006. My dad met her in Saigon. My dad still has pictures of them hanging out and drinking beers. This was 67 I believe.

Very cool to find something like that... to close a gap in your family knowledge is very satisfying. Priceless even.
