I see the little fella has a busted lip. I'm guessing your dad didn't take much talking back

This French journalist would run circles around NYT’s “journalist” Taylor Lorenz.

Dammit I’m almost 40 and married for near a decade and I’m regretting it after seeing this photo

Excellent story OP, one of the best I’ve seen on TD

Look how yellow and nasty her teeth look. They look awful in the pic in the OP, in the pic you posted with the side profile they're past yellow to almost brown

You have no idea what she and those boys went through in that jungle, and as my grandmother taught me, I am leaving before I say something not nice about you. Good day and think before you type.

Think your dad smashed that photographer?

It took 16 posts for someone to ask the important questions. Obviously op’s dad was a badass and the pic is awesome, but 16 come on that’s like cnn level journalism.

My dad’s right shoulder patch was the 173d Airborne Brigade Sky Soldiers from 2 tours in Vietnam. Many years later he retired as a Col.

My grandpa used to talk about being in the war as in where he went. He was stationed mostly in Italy, but he never once talked about the war itself. It was as if his mind had two different views from the war. There was the places he went and things he saw (that didn't involve war), but then there was this whole other part of it he never spoke a word about.

I was raised by my grandpa. He was in the Navy in WW2, never wanted to talk about it. He went in enlisted, wound up as an Officer. (LT). Did his 20 and retired. Spent time in the Med, off of Africa, and in the South Pacific

I vividly remember being in elementary and middle school, having to do reports on WW2. I’d ask him questions, he’d tell me to go down the street and ask Captain Emerick, a retired WW2 vet who lived about 5 houses down the street.

He’d always complain when I rang his doorbell, telling me I should be talking to my grandpa. But he’d always talk and answer my questions.

I remember being 16-17 years old, a guy researching for a book cold called my grandpa, wanting information on the possibility of a couple of U boats being sunk by the ship he was on between Charleston and Jacksonville, IIRC. He initially refused to share any info, saying they were told never to discuss it. He finally told the researcher the only way he’d talk about it was if the researcher contacted the CO of the ship, and he gave his ok.

Turned out the CO was still alive, called my grandpa and gave him permission to tell what he knew.

I remember grandpa being extremely anti-Japanese, to the point I’d mentioned I was thinking about buying a used Toyota ( this was early 80’s), he flipped out and said no one in his family was buying a Toyota.

Fast forward to 1993, he was dying in the hospital. Not long before he passed he began speaking what sounded like fluent Japanese. An old shipmate of his was visiting, told me what I never knew…that at the end of the War they needed short guys to go into tunnels with a flashlight and a .45, trying to convince Japanese soldiers the war was over. He volunteered because he was short and stocky.

They basically never gave up, he carried those memories to his grave.
