Go watch The Searchers or The Shootist or True Grit or Rio Bravo and tell me Wayne wasn't a good actor when he wanted to be.

This.

I'm in agreeance with yall. John Wayne is a terrific actor when he wants to be and he's good at being John Wayne, which is fine with me.

Maybe parts were written to his style. He was selective, borderline over exposed at times, but never left the audience feeling exhausted from his presence.

It isn't obvious, but he was way ahead of his time. He was a restrained, under actor. He didn't have much stage experience or training, he was a converted film stuntman/extra. He didn't have a "method" or any sort of instinct to project. He was a relatively conscious "under" actor. A "reactor" if you will. He sought to react as a normal person would, not a Hollywood actor. Not flat or disconnected, but a much more natural delivery of material compared to his peers of the 1930s through 1950s.

If you want to compare him to great actors of his generation, Spencer Tracy and Gary Cooper aren't denigrated as always playing themselves, but there isn't a playing card's difference between the three of them in acting style, delivery or, frankly, ability.

Now, if you look at guys with, perhaps a little more range (or ability, if you prefer), William Powell was also a natural guy who could do serious or funny, or something in between. Cary Grant probably in that same category as well.

But, for film acting as a lead in those sorts of films, John Wayne was a fantastic choice for both an entertaining film as well as a profitable one.

Horrible actor. Couldn't hold Clint Eastwood's jockstrap.

So, a short list:

Stagecoach
Fort Apache
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Rio Grande
The Quiet Man (NOTE: Non-western period piece)
The Searchers
Rio Bravo
The Sons of Katie Elder
Big Jake
True Grit
The Shootist

How about the Cowboys

And The Shootist has Lauren Bacall Some dont know because most of her movies she was old but she was very nice looking lady when she was young

There's a difference between a great actor and a great movie star. Nobody is going to confuse John Wayne with Daniel Day Lewis or Gary Oldman but he is one of the greatest movie stars we've ever seen on screen.

John Wayne was great at playing The Duke. For the most part he rarely strayed from that role. Kind of like Clint Eastwood, as long as he played the mysterious stranger and/or total badass, he was always badass. Love the Duke and Eastwood for what they are. Both made some of the most rewatchable classics ever.

He had presence, maybe because of his size. He also knew how to move on camera, possibly because he had been an athlete.

Unrelated, he said a lot of his acting in Westerns came from conversing with Wyatt Earp, who spent a fair amount of time hanging around the studio commissary.

No. Clint Eastwood is a good actor. John Wayne is a cliche.

He was the greatest movie star of the the 20th Century.

Tom Cruise is probably the greatest of the 21st Century.

There's no shame in saying they weren't great actors. Hollywood is about eyeballs not acting chops. And people around the world went to John Wayne movies just like they go to Tom Cruise movies now. Its Hollywood, who's to say you're not a great actor if you're the biggest draw on the planet? I mean, you're doing something right.

I actually don’t think his performance in True Grit is that good. That Oscar was a lifetime achievement award.

Ethan Edwards in The Searchers is his best role by far. It’s a travesty he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for it.

Good question. Haven't seen his films in years but if someone were to ask me to list good actors from days gone by John Wayne wouldn't come to mind. I guess he was good enough for the time. That's just me though.

The more I think about it I guess we only have Great actors and Good actors. Great would be Jimmy Stewart and Good would be John Wayne. Obviously there are Bad actors but they probably aren't getting cast that much and get weeded out after a few box office flops.

John Wayne was a F@G. I had to do work at his house and he answered the door in a dress. He had us install 2way mirrors in his house so he could watch his guests have sex.

No, he was terrible. He was, of course, great at playing John Wayne.

Not dynamic but had a character that resonated, to put it mildly.
