Louisiana to consider mandatory summer school

Great job Louisiana! 10 days of 3 hours of intervention should fix the problem
Why aren't we doing this during the school year? All we hear about now in education is the "science of reading." We are taking the long way around to teaching kids to read and do simple math. For all of our spending on technology, "advancements," and "deeper understanding of learning," our children are worse off than they were 20 years ago.
Don't worry though, 30 hours of summer school is going to fix it.

The possible adjustment is the result of the state’s literacy crisis, which education leaders say they’re poised to solve with a direct approach.
In referring to his initiative on literacy, State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley said, “I’m not going to back down.”

“If a student in grades kindergarten, first, second, third, or fourth isn’t reading on grade level by the end of the school year, they would participate in 30 additional hours of support over the summer.”

This is going to be dismissed as racist.

12 hours a day 365 days a year would really help with crime

Sometimes it’s the teacher’s fault and sometimes it’s because the kid is a crack baby. So increased property taxes (or some other tax eventually) to pay for the teachers’ pay those additional 30 hours only to have the student back at square one when August rolls around. At some point the education system needs to admit that we just have a lot of stupid people in Louisiana.
What really needs to happen is the state needs to make it a lot easier to fire ineffective teachers. My wife teaches teachers and is accountable for their performance. She tells me every day about how so many teachers just don’t give a shite about following standards and cut corners every day but it’s so hard to fire them so the schools are stuck with them until they essentially get fed up with corrective action enough to finally just quit. THAT’S the problem. We make it very difficult to fire a teacher in this state.

Summer schools for a 5 or 6 year old is ridiculous.

Public schools in Louisiana should be dismantled for good.
What a disaster, and 30 hours ain't gonna do shite to fix this mess.

Should move to a quarter or trimester system with shorter "breaks" throughout year anyway

A large portion of the state’s citizens do not care about doing the right thing. They do not care about what everyone is supposed to do, only what they want to do. This relates to violent crime, literacy, basic manners, even upkeep of property. Nothing will be fixed until the culture is fixed.

Let's not let perfect be the enemy of good here.
If this would actually help the issue, it's worth a shot. If it's little more than the same babysitting they already do, don't give it a shot.

Is it free child care disguised as summer school?

It’s just a way to fund extra daycare

Yeah it's hard to feel sorry when teachers whine about pay when you see the product they're putting out. My kid's AP Biology 2 teacher literally doesn't do anything. The kids do hours of homework a night for them to just go over it in class together while she sits there. When asked about clarity on something she LITERALLY said, "I don't know. Google it". My kids are juniors and do not go to bed before 1am due to massive amounts of homework. They're teaching themselves outside of 1-2 classes.

Even if literacy wasn’t racist, I know a young me would hate having to go to summer school. Even if it looks like they are half assing it.

It is not going to completely fix the problem. But when you have parents who (if they can even read themselves) could not care any less if their child learns to read or not, it's worth trying something 30 hours of reading lessons over the course of the summer is 30 hours more than most of these children will receive at home.

That's 10 more meals for those babies. Think of the children!!! They go the entire Summer without meals unless the school gives them out!!!

Besides the fact that this is needed, I can't imagine many parents being against it. Figuring out what to do with your kids during the summer is expensive and stressful.

Summer school isn’t going to fix dumb kids with no parental support
