What do you think about cars that won’t let you drive drunk?

The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending that all new vehicles in the U.S. be required to have alcohol monitoring systems that can stop an intoxicated person from driving. Nearly 43,000 people were killed in the U.S. last year from traffic accidents and drunk driving is a leading cause. This could be a major inconvenience if your a little tipsy, but what if you’re loved ones are killed by a drunk driver? Thoughts?

Good, implement them yesterday.

ETA: Honestly a little surprised so many down voters support drunk driving.

Not enough, DUIS get too much of an easy pass compared to other crimes that get harsher sentences

Now lets do cars that don't let you be on your phone while driving.

Yeah, until they decide to turn your car off because you were critical of the party online

Oh, maybe we can handcuff everyone until an arbitrary group has decided they aren’t going to do anything unacceptable

Wait until there's an emergency and people can't escape/evacuate a situation or can't bring someone to a hospital.

That'll go over well.

We need cars that prevent you from driving if you have a suspended license or no insurance

Texting is far more common and more dangerous IMO. We need to solve for that. People far smarter than I will need to come up with a way to block just the driver from calling besides bluetooth and not texting.

Just one more thing to add to the cost of automobiles that are already too expensive.

Wanna lessen the frequency of drunk driving? Make it illegal for bars to have parking lots. If they can have no guns within 1000 feet of a school - then they can do no parking lots within 1000 feet of a bar or restaurant whose sales are more than 30% alcohol.

Seriously, there's already too much government mandated shite forced into cars these days. We don't need yet another electronic gadget added to the list. You KNOW when you will need your car the most, that little gadget will short out or fail and default to automatic lock down of your car.

On a lighter note, I think I'll bring this up at tonight's D.A.M.M. meeting. (Drunks Against Madd Mothers)

Hate it. I shoudln't be forced to have to pay more money for extra equipment becuase someone else may, at some point, made a bad decision. If it was required for habitual drunk drivers like some currently have to have an interlock system or whatever, then sure! All for it. But it shouldn't be required for all drivers just because of the poor decisions of a few.

I think the FBI should be able to control the locks on your house to not let you leave based on certain factors like being drunk, being in a hurry, being a heavy phone user, being upset, being right of center politically, etc. If you have nothing to hide, the presumption of guilt shouldn't be a problem.

I think if one more person starts a thread on it, I may pull a Billy Comforto.
