I could easily see the government stepping in like with the air traffic controllers and forcing an end to the strike.

ATCs were federal employees.

Railway freight workers aren’t.

The problem with that is you always have some that either won't or can't work slow. The railroad unions in the south do not stick together for a cause. The union members up north seem to stand up for what they want. Just my opinion.

Rail workers are federally regulated and CAN be forced back to work. Whether that is a good idea is another matter.

First of all, if people were getting fired for being there would lawsuits out the wazoo.

Second, if shite was so bad, where has the union been while conditions went to hell?

Sounds to me like the union has allowed this to happen in order to get full support for a strike instead of doing its job to make the RR adhere to contract conditions.

Can any of you rail baws confirm this?

Yes, it is true. The only way to be off work without points, is to schedule a personal leave day or daily vacation day. And those are capped. Only one-two allowed per day.

Blocking communist labor unions from striking is not an entirely new concept. In Texas, public sector employees can join labor unions, but the unions cannot organize walkouts or strikes.

Now of course, railroad companies are private companies. Is there a way to force those thirsty commies back to work? Possibly. Railroad companies do receive a lot of federal privileges and have a lot of federal contracts. It'll be a nasty legal battle if the federal government decides to intervene.

All in all, It is just about guaranteed that if there is no compromise, the Biden administration will frick this up.

The unions have been fighting this for a while. This didn't just come up suddenly.

Glad I didn't buy train tickets for our trip to Boston in a few weeks.

At this point just let it all fall apart. Time for people to start feeling real pain and clue in to what’s happening.

Thanks!

How the hell did it get to that point? Where has the RWU been on this?

They have been fighting it but the court has decided its policy and not a negotiating item. Therefore the unions are trying to get them to negotiate it with the rest of the contract. The engineers and conductors are the only employees affected. Other crafts don't have this issue and are not on call all the time.

Amtrak doesn't own the rails.

And have been bailed out by the Federal government numerous times.

Took a 5-hour car ride by train and it took 12 hours.

Train was 4 hours late and had to pause constantly for shipping lines for right of way.

When they figure out that its actually saving taxpayers money by having Amtrak shut down, they'll get it going again before you can blink. All government run subsidized industries lose money. I bet even the brothel they run in Nevada loses money, if thats even possible ??

5 year deal, 14% raise immediately, including back pay to 2020. Raises will go up annually over 5 years to total 24% of current pay. Also $1,000 bonuses can be earned. Health benefits and scheduling/on-call issues are supposedly big in the unions favor

Of course he will.

I suspect he (or, more likely, someone who could form a coherent sentence) told the RR carriers he wasn't going to intervene in the strike and let the entire country suffer so they better make a deal.
