Heartbreaking 1st hand account from the bakery owner. What was done to this business and family is criminal.
Reading the account was a gut punch. I feel ill. I hope this family finds some peace. Shame on Oberlin.

If oberlin still refuses to pay the Sheriff should arrest the college president and the chief financial officer, then seize its’ assets and have a sheriff ‘s sale to liquidate the bitch.

As I understand it the faculty member responsible just moved to another institution. Absolutely no accountability for her.
Meredith Raimondo. Now at Oglethorpe University, outside of Atlanta.

I’m sure that the business should be able to get a court order demanding payment and threatening a freeze on the college’s accounts if they don’t make arrangements.
Their athletic department can pay that off with petty cash.

1. I just threw up lunch
2. The appeal bond can be executed upon. Lawyers want to get paid too!
3. Deposition in aid of execution allows for full asset disclosure with a writ to the sheriff to execute
They will get paid sooner rather than later. And… I’m not sure an appeal to scotus stalls these efforts

How do they force them to pay? Serious question.
Set a judgment debtor rule and question the President or the board of trustee chairperson to determine the extent of their assets. Have the court then order the sheriff to seize the liquid assets- bank accounts- in an amount sufficient to satisfy the judgment plus interest. If there’s not enough cash, seize investments accounts and sell them off. lastly, have the sheriff seize real estate , buildings and furnishings therein and take possession.

It was a 4-3 decision by the Supreme Court not to take the case, meaning it is a final judgment at the intermediate level. Doesn't indicate 3 supreme court judges held for the college.
Bingo! If it had been 4-3 the other way they would have heard the case and maybe ruled 7-0 in Oberlin’s favor. Four jurists had made the decision that there was nothing wrong with the ruling that needed to be reviewed. That’s all.

quote:Maybe they file the judgement in court and put a lien on the entire property? They may end up owning the whole college. If that was me and I owned the college, I might sell off assets and use the funds to take down the whole campus and turn it into a park.
Maybe the family should take a page out of Ron White’s book and demand facilities on campus they can call “Gibson’s big ol fricking building”

Good.
The key will be if university attorneys take heed and start trying to reign in baseless claims of racism.

Gibson’s, a restaurant and bakery near Oberlin College, can now collect $36 million from Oberlin for defamation over racism claims, according to a court ruling
Oberlin is screwed. They should write the check and walk away. They tried to frick over a family bakery over “racism” because some black kids were caught shoplifting. Oberlin gets what they deserve.

Not really…amounts this size never get paid.
The $36M is already being held in surety by Oberlin's insurance, the original amount was $44M but reduced to $25M + $6M for attorneys fees + $4.5M in interest accrued.

Oberlin was not granted an appeal, they must pay up. I love the bolded part below.

The college’s board of trustees announced its decision Thursday to pay the million – nine days after the Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear the college’s appeal of a lower-court ruling,
The case centered on whether Oberlin officials defamed the bakery by supporting students who accused it of racial profiling. The courts decisions essentially said school officials had done so, which legal experts told the newspaper may make other colleges think twice about joining student causes, the newspaper also reports.
