PPSA has gotteb huge on this board. I'm sure its good programming, but how do you guys just lift?

In my opinion, metabolic conditioning is just as much a staple of fitness and makes everything easier. I can go play golf and not be worn out and go hangout at the pool all day. Or play some hoops and not be exhausted the rest of the day, whatever.

Im not taking anything away from lifting, I do as much strength training as most of you guys are doing too, but doing no real conditioning just seems like you aren't maximizing your fitness

Bro like

It’s the only thing that isn’t fake

Like I go to vote and they change it to some dude with alzheimers. The stock market only goes down.

But when I put that metal on the bar it’s 185 or whatever it says it is at face value. That’s the only thing that’s real

I lift, because that is my "me" time.

I get my cardio from my never ending "Honey Do" list

Even that is getting political with all the kilogram stuff you see out there these days.

It’s all about whatever your goals are. Do you want to be in great shape and run all the time, more power to you. However, in my experience people who poke fun at powerlifters are usually just overcompensating for the fact that they’re weak as puppy piss

Im not poking fun, but being able to bench 500, but not walk up two flights of stairs doesn't seem to have much utility.

I'd rather bench 315 and be able to run a 21 minute 5k too

I can get most of my conditioning work done without specifically trying to because I'm a really active dude. Even when I'm not mixing in running/HIIT with my lifting the hiking, soccer, tennis, pickleball, foraging, etc that I do keeps my cardio decent. I live near Tunica Hills so one of my favorite weekend morning activities is running the hills on the trails there. It's not something I really consider conditioning or gym work because I'm just doing it because I like doing it.

Sometimes the PPSA workouts feel like cardio depending on how much supersetting you decide to do. Doing heavy bench with heavy DL will get the heart pumping. I usually do their 4 day per week programs, run 1-2 times per week, and walk 2x per week when golfing to get my cardio in.

21 minute 5k

If you are over 30, that is Advanced. Once you hit 50 it would be Elite.

being able to bench 500

This is beyond Elite in all age groups and weights, it is world class. In other words, extremely rare. You will not find anyone in a commercial gym benching 500lbs, unless they are also there to sign autographs. You would also weigh North of 275lbs.

With that being said, I would take bench 500lbs. You are a somebody at that point. 21m 5K is what HS kids can do, little wimpy HS kids.

That's not metabolic conditioning. That's taxing your CNS

Strength is never a weakness and weakness is never a strength.

I do "situational" conditioning, I call it. I'll never need to run 5+ miles so I don't train for that. If something were to ever happen, I may need to be able to carry up to a 200lb person, or I may need to pull myself up plus my child, I may need to pick some heavy shite up to move it off a person. I want to be strong, and still able to run a mile, with some sprints involved. More muscle makes you harder to kill.

If my blood work is all good, as it usually is, I'm going to stick with lifting hard and some basic conditioning.

And big legs and big arms are cooler.

for me personally, i dont really need to do a lot of it to be really healthy.

1) i have 3 kids and am constantly playing outside with them. either baseball, playing some football, basketball, swimming, riding bikes together etc

2) i try and go for a 20-30 min walk almost everyday, if not i walk in my rest periods

3) i hate long distance running. I used to like it, but since i left the army about 15 years ago i have despised it.

4) i jump rope and drag the sled and do animal crawls as part of my warm up

also my blood pressure is really good and my resting heart rate is 55, not to bad for a guy about to be 40. Is my BF% where i want it....nope, but doing metabolic conditioning really wouldnt help that.

other reason why is because i never use that energy system in real life so i dont ever feel a need to train it. if i was goign to add anything it would be sprints, heavy bag work or sprints on the air bike/rower.

but main reason is like doing things that i like to do that help me stay consistant. i get plenty of steps in during the day and the newest research shows biggest things in relation to all cause mortality are 8-10k steps a day and resistance training.

I agree it’s not going to help me run a 21 min 5k but it absolutely is conditioning

Curious what your definition of conditioning is then.

I think you can do “conditioning” through manipulating rest time and through doing supersets that keep you moving throughout the workout, similar to 5/3/1 Krypteia program. It’s not pushing a sled or doing hill sprints but I think it’s incorrect to flat out say it’s not conditioning. Would you consider an EMOM workout conditioning?

Probably an agree to disagree situation

I have not lived in the south for over a decade but is this a thing? Is golf wearing people out down there?

The reason people do not do cardio is the same reason people do not go all the way down on squats, or they bounce the bar on deadlifts, or do leg press instead of squatting, or do arm curls when they can not do 10 pullups, or they waste time at the gym doing calf raises...hard work is hard. Cardio is hard.

As for myself, I have pretty much done PPSA workouts exclusively since last October. I do a lot of trail running and mtn bikng in actual mtns. I just choose my max accordingly so I am not cooked the entire day. PPSA gives you a great foundation and can be incorporated into a cardi full lifestyle.

it is for the anaerobic alactic(Immediate or ATP) & anaerobic lactic(Glycolytic) systems or can be if done correctly. PPSA certainly hits both energy systems.

now i agree it doesnt hit the aerobic(Oxidative) energy system, but is that system really that important? all cause mortality doesnt seem to show it is. I know i dont use it ever during real life.

my resting heart rate is in the 50s, anything below 60 is considered bradycardia or low resting heart rate. So i already have an extremely strong heart.

how am i leaving fitness on the table? because i cant run a sub 7min mile.....why the frick would i even want to do that? i can ride my bmx bike all over, sprint around a baseball/football field so what good would it do me except to zap recovery?
