Interesting statistical write up on Steffen’s current form. Argues this is just his level rather than some bad run of form. I can’t really argue otherwise. I would much prefer Turner come the first WC game.

For all the talk of "he's better with his feet", he tends to get himself in trouble with his casual attitude on the ball. I would much rather have a GK who plays it safe and boots it long than one who thinks himself to be Ederson and is nowhere near that.

On top of that he also seems to go on walkabout at least once per game and leave himself in awful situations. He's one of those guys I don't need any numbers or stats. The eyeball test says it all with him.

I feel like he’s good for one major gaff a game that puts us at serious risk of conceding a goal. That could be the difference between getting out of the group stage or being eliminated.

Good reactionary shot stopper, bad at everything else. Feel like he is capable of brilliant saves, but he has to make them because he’s in a bad position.

Oddly enough I may rather have him back there against a side that’s going to just pepper the goal ala Belgium 2014 for that reason.

I haven’t watched him a ton but when I’ve seen him for USMNT he just makes me nervous. He just seems too nonchalant to me.

Not completely confident in Turner either to be honest. He seems solid, not spectacular, which may be the best we have this cycle.

Never been a huge fan of Steffen. Always seems a few seconds away from a massive mistake.

He had some really good performances in City's cup ties, but they are overshadowed by some of his mistakes.
Turner is the more consistent option, but with limited playing time who knows what will happen...
Zach has a greater potential to turn in a great (or horrible) performance. Was hoping the Boro loan would help his issues, but so far it doesn't appear to be the case.

I don't rate him at all. As others have said his nonchalant too fricking cool demeanor drives me nuts.

Steffen shouldn’t be starting a game for us unless both Turner and Horvath are injured. His attitude/demeanor out there irks me, and he’s not some amazing goalie like a few certain people make him out to be. Sitting on the bench at City getting 7 games a year is not better than starting every week in a smaller league.
Plus, how many people actually feel confident when he’s in goal?

If Horvath is outplaying him in August, September, and October in the Championship, why wouldn’t he be given a serious look?

Ever since he stood on his head in the U20 World Cup, I had been holding out hope for him to finally put it together and be our #1, and there have been some moments throughout his career where it looked like that was happening (Friendly at France in 2018, both Mexico matches in WCQ), but for every step forward he appears to take, it seems like he immediately takes like 4 steps back.

I have no faith in him at the moment to play a competent match.

I've not seen the data presented that way, but it does make a pretty strong case against Steffen being our #1 in goal.

People keep throwing Horvath's name around like he's above Steffen and I just don't see it.

Both of them are prone to just making terrible mistakes and are kind of toiling away in the championship. I'd take Turner and Johnson over both of them right now but I don't fully trust them either, especially now that Turner's match time is going to significantly decrease.

It really is a credit to our backline that we haven't given up that many goals in Gregg's tenure considering we've never once had a clear answer at keeper.

He did well in the Nations League, and that was his last time getting serious minutes with the national team.

None of our options are very good, and imo this is our weakest position, even more than striker.

He had a howler in June at El Salvador.

I think I’ve complained about Steffen every single time I’ve watched him play recently. He’s horrible in the air, below average with his feet, and mediocre at making saves.

Hard pass starting him any time soon until we see any sort of play.

this has to be the first world cup in 30 years that GK isn’t a slam dunk choice. on the bright side, our midfield+zimmerman won’t let a single shot on goal the entire tournament
