Traveling to Vancouver, WA (suburb of Portland, OR) for work next week.
Staying at the Heathman Lodge - anyone stay here? Looks nice.
Any recs for dinner places or local beers to try out?

Salt and Straw Ice Cream
Great Notion and Breakside Breweries, there are a bunch of good others also.
Coava Coffee
Food Carts-11th and Hawthorne but there are others. Lardo across from the carts is good also.
For all the issues with drugs/homeless Portland has, they get food and drink right. Compared to other cities out west, it is cheap to eat and drink there.

Wife has stayed there twice for work conferences. Nice place, weird location.
We went across the river and had dinner at Masu Sushi and drinks at the Green Room in downtown PDX.

For Vancouver breweries, I like Fortside, Loowit, and Heathen.

You could hit Prost and grab some Matts BBQ or Desi's Indian (both food trucks in the same pod with Prost). Nearby breweries are Ecliptic, Ex-Novo and Upright. Great Notion isnt too far away either. Ken's Artisan Pizza is really good and a nice atmos.

Both have more than 1 spot.
Great Notion on Alberta is the best option.
Breakside in NW Portland is the best option. The other Great Notion spot is minutes away if that's more convenient.
Pine state biscuits for breakfast, expect a line. The location on Alberta is next to Great Notion.
J&M Cafe for a nice breakfast without the wait.
Breweries
Great Notion NE...nice outdoor area
Breakside NW...nice outdoor area
Ruse
Wayfinder...nice outdoor patio
Von Ebert
Barrel 10 is close to Von Ebert and has a great rooftop patio.
Cascade for world-class sours
Old Town
Ex Novo....
Loyal Legion is a taproom featuring 99 taps of nothing but Oregon beers. Around the corner is a favorite food stop of mine, Robo Taco.

Lardo has a pork belly gyro that I recreate a couple of times a year. It's fantastic if it's on the menu.
In the food carts there is Chicken and Guns. That's the best food cart there.
I've got more but that'll get you started.

The best Vancouver brewery imo is Trap Door. Thai food cart adjacent and the largest volume marijuana store in the state across the street.

Or Apizza Scholls. Both considered the best pizza in the city.

All I can say is avoid any of the McMenamins family of restaurants, the atmosphere in most of them is cool/nice but the food is just not good

Ruse Crust Collective in Vancouver is great especially if you’re a craft beer fan. Pizza was solid too.
Portland eats I’d recommend are Khao Man Gai and Apizza Scholls. Though when my wife and I visited in May, Scholls was to-go only. Make sure to ask for the chilis on the side if you stop at Khao Man Gai. I fricking love that place. I get it every time I visit.

The one time I was at Trap Door, the place was packed, so I only had one beer before we headed south to another brewery. So unfortunately I haven’t been able to adequately rate the place, but it is for sure a popular spot.
If that is the #1 volume dispensary, it must mean Oregon weed regulations and taxes are worse than Washington. Washington seems to have the cheapest prices and least restrictions of the legal weed states I have visited. I’ve haven’t been to an Oregon dispensary yet.
The 2022 Washington Beer Festival was held in June, and out of the 90+ breweries, Heathen finished first and Fortside fourth. I’m kind of biased to Fortside, because a friend of a friend is one of the co-owners. I am not an IPA fan, but Fortside’s Orange Whip IPA is amazing.

Not a restaurant recommendation but if you haven’t stayed at this old school that has been converted in to a hotel. I stayed there last time I was in Portland and it is pretty unique.

I was going to recommend The Grant House (Eatery at Grant House) in Fort Vancouver, but I see it closed permanently as a result of covid lockdown.
Very sad to hear this.

When I was up there last year I made it a point to not spend any money in Portland. I don’t want to support them. I went over to Vancouver instead and attended a delightful farmer’s market.
It is staggering to see how much homelessness and graffiti can be found in Portland, OR.

Yes! Scholes is bomb.
Also if you want to kill a day, McMenamins Edgefield is fun.
I like Izakaya Shigezo for late dinner, japanese pub food.
Salty's on the Columbia has a great patio, the river is a like a clean version of the Mississippi with great views.

Completely agree. It's a nice lodge... in the middle of a corporate business park.
It would be like if someone built a beautiful fishing lodge themed place in the middle of Northpark in Covington.

So I ended up being a LOT busier than I thought which cut down on my time to go out and eat / explore. So here is a quick-ish summary.
Mt. St Helens was a very interesting place. We went to two different centers. We first went to the Forest Learning Center - some nice views of the area and distant views of the mountain. Learned a lot about the replanting of trees. Nice little picnic area as we had brought a lunch with us.
We then went to the Johnson Ridge Observatory. It's just amazing - for a southern boy like me - to stare into the side of the mountain. Learned a lot about the eruption (I was 1 month old when it happened). I had no idea that FAR greater damage was done from the landslides and explosion than from lava / ash. Some rivers and lakes were buried under 300 feet of material in minutes.
As far as dining there was a Shari's right down from our hotel so I walked there for breakfast one morning (63 degrees at 7 am... amazing!) and the pancakes were good. Ate at Hudson's twice... both times were for work events. Food was great both times. First night there I was tired of traveling so I went to Burgerville as it was close... it was fine. Nothing amazing.
Last night we had a group go to the Waterfront Taphouse. Views were great... food was good.
Beers I tried... in order of my fav to least favorite
Breakside IPA
Ft. George 3-way IPA
Boneyard RPM IPA
Tricerahops IPA
Prismatic Juicy IPA
Total Domination Northwest IPA
Finally, we ventured over to Portland one night to see the Sistine Chapel exhibit. We intended to go there and eat somewhere downtown after. Well... we park in a garage, go down to street level... and in the two minute walk to the mall where the exhibit was... witness a store being robbed. In broad daylight. So we did the exhibit (we already had tickets) and just left after.
