In the mid-80s, 3month summer. School was day-after-day-after-day. We used to hope the bus would brake down so we wouldn't have to go. Storm days, HA! Unless there was a hurricane at the school that morning we went. The closer you lived to New Orleans the more days you got off. When it sprinkles my nephew is off for two days now.

Started August 18th, Finished May 25th.
13 years of perfect attendance.
Seniors got out a week early.
If they had snow days or hurricane days, which both were rare, they would add it on to the end of the year.
My mother didn't get the memo one day, and we showed up to school during a snow day anyway.
These days, the schools build in all of the extra days on the front end and use the school year for teacher development, extra weeks of vacation, spring breaks, etc.
Why it is so important to know what day you will finish... or why they have to use school days to do their development days? I don't know.
Just seems like more bureaucracy and government bloat (for worse performance).

Highland elementary in the 50's may have had a/c in the office. i do recall the office had window units when i started WMHS. i spent some time with Wood Sirs there. i think upstairs classrooms had a/c when i graduated in 1971. school started after labor day and ended late may. i don't think we got the whole week off thanksgiving, and maybe two weeks at christmas. Good Friday was the only spring holiday.

I remember going to school a week before labor day. I always thought it was stupid to not just go after. I went to catholic schools and our schedule was different from public. U-high always started 2 weeks before us b/c they started when LSU started.

My 2nd grader started week before last. We always started right around 8/7-8/11. Always remember because it was right at my grandma's birthday

Ahhh yes thats why I was 10 minutes late today.

When I was in 8th grade we started the day after Labor Day. The next year we started the week before Labor Day. It stayed that way throughout. But, other than Senior year we had our last day on Memorial Day.

Back in the day we started the Tuesday after Labor Day, but then it was the Stone Age we didn’t have AC in several of the classes…
Same here, we had no AC in the school.

Always started 1st week of September probably after Labor Day. We also were allowed to come in late during Strawberry picking time, but that was in the last century.

I remember one year in high school, either my junior or senior year, we started July 30th. People were PISSED. But over all we usually started mid to late august mostly. My mom always said they never started until after Labor Day in her day.

No. They start early because they get what seems like upward of 15 one week breaks during the school year now

Not sure why there's a summer break at all besides the fact that teachers unions have way too much power.

Could have sworn in started August 20 something back in my day. I'm assuming it's earlier now for the hurricane days but who knows.
This is what I remember. My kids have a ton of snow days built in.

Our district has been starting school a littler earlier ever year since my son was in 1st grade. They used to start the Thursday after Labor Day but he’s getting ready to start his sophomore year next week. It’s nice to have the school year end before June, though. It ended on June 8th before they started moving the dates back.

It was always the 3rd week of august when i went.
I’m not sure what these arse holes are doing but never did we lose 3 weeks of summer to start school. As a kid, i would be pissed and we better be getting more time off during the year

i was in school from 91-03 and we would always go back the week before labor day (I remember because I always enjoyed have the short week after school had already started.
We got the major holidays, we got W-F for Thanksgiving, we got 2 weeks for Christmas, and we got Spring Break. Otherwise, we'd get one teacher's planning day (students off day) per report card period.
We usually finished the year around Memorial Day.

Exactly what it is. There’s a fall break, winter break in February, Mardi Gras break (for some) and added days (usually about 5) for bad weather. They should cut out the fall and winter breaks.
Yep. This is a byproduct of teachers not being able to go more than 3 weeks without some sort of "break", exacerbated further by the need to now cancel school anytime there is mildly inclement weather in the forecast. There is no need for a "fall break". Why is there a week long "Winter break" (i.e. Mardi Gras in Louisiana) a month or two following the 2 week Christmas break, AND a week long "spring break" relatively soon after the winter break?

My birthday is 8/12. Ever since the 80s, we started at the middle or end of that week
Posted on 8/3/22 at 2:07 pm to LSUZombie
In the last 15 years, schools have started earlier in August. Due to a few more breaks and high schools wanting to end the fall semester before the Christmas holidays

Used to be Labor Day to Memorial Day..... then they started counting the minutes of classroom time.
