I mentioned the no AC thing to a college-aged kid the other day and he looked at me like I was a space alien.

the only places with a/c in any of the schools i attended were the office and the teacher's lounge.

I went to school in the 80’s and college in the 90’s and we always started around August 20-25.
My parents said they always started school AFTER Labor Day.

I went to most of my grade school in Michigan.
We started in September i think and ended late May/Early June.
Now here in GA my kid started Monday and he will get out before Memorial day. But in the Fall he gets a Fall break (Week off last week of September) Gets a week off during Thanksgiving. Then in Spring he gets a Winter Break (week off in Feb) and then obviously a week off for spring break.
I like it more this way. Give them a few more breaks during the year and dont bunch them all up with three months off in the summer.

No. It used to start later. We also used to go back to school for a few days after Memorial Day. They are done on Wed or Thur before Mem Day and their first semester ends right before Christmas. Sounds like a much better calendar to me.

In the 90's, pretty sure we were starting school around August 18-22 but also didn't get out until the first few days of June.
Now St Tammany starts next week but ends the 3rd week of May. So they start 2 weeks earlier but also get out for summer 2 weeks sooner than I remember.

Now they cancel school for a threat of thunderstorms. You have to account for those cancellation days.

I know it was at least a week or two before labor day for us bc one year we got our asses kicked in the jamboree football game and coach told us "Monday is labor day and bet your arse we're going to labor." We did.

Nope. My senior year in 91 we went back on September 15th and started summer break in June. We got full 3 months of summer break. This all changed in the mid 90's when the Dept of Education mandated a certain number of school days tied to funding. This extended the typical school year by at least 2-3 weeks depending on which school system you were in.
What I find hilarious is I don't think the kids are any smarter now then they were in then, in fact I would say dumber. They don't even teach cursive anymore and common core math has made almost all the kids idiots trying to go into stem.

My birthday is the 25th and I remember school always starting on or around my Bday. We also used to start later in the morning...it was usually around 8am-3pm.

Exactly what it is. There’s a fall break, winter break in February, Mardi Gras break (for some) and added days (usually about 5) for bad weather. They should cut out the fall and winter breaks.

When I was in elementary and middle school MANY years ago, school always started on the Thursday before labor day. Never made sense to me but we'd have 2 days of school and then a long weekend.....That was back when the Labor Day Telethon was a legitimate thing.

Part of the logic is that it allows the first semester to wrap up ahead of Christmas break. It makes for less re-teaching when the kids return.

We have 10 built in weather days to make sure we get the appropriate amount of instructional minutes. We used all and more last year. So then we adjusted the schedule to get the minutes in.
ETA: I don’t necessarily love this, just stating why we start early instead of late August now. Also, teachers don’t decide holidays or how many PD days, etc.

I know they have started this early for awhile, not sure how long, but my nephew graduated last year and for some reason I remember most of his years they started at the beginning of August.
When I was in school, it seemed like it was closer to Labor Day.
