Grinding/Farming tales to tell?

I love RPGs, I love learning new spells/abilities and increasing my stats so I can take on the stronger enemies in the new area I just arrived in to explore.
But I'm also somewhat of a conpletionist and like to accomplish all I can in my games, and some game designers are absolute sadists towards people like me. And honestly sometimes I wonder why I even bother trying to complete games like this.
I'm trying to replay FFIV, it's a fun linear old school RPG I grew up with but I'm at the end of the game now where all I have left to do is farm for rare drops to get the best equipment and summons, but these drop rates are ridiculous. Everything you need to get comes with a 0.4% drop rate for all the equipment for your party of 5 members so you're looking at least 20 items with that drop rate.
The only boost you can possibly get doubles the rate once, so it goes from 0.4% to 0.8%, but even with that I've gone through at least 700 battles today and haven't even gotten one drop yet. Just made me say "what am I even doing this for?" and so I just beat the final boss and I'm moving to my next game because frick trying to get all the achievements when it involves that much grinding and farming lol

I probably did more grinding during WotLK and Cata WoW than any other gaming times.
Got the Time-Lost Protodrake, Ashes of Al’ar, and Ultramarine Qiraji Battletank. Mount and pet farming were definitely my jam. I think it was due to my history with Pokémon

I think it took me somewhere near 300 Stratholme runs to get the Deathcharger's Reins

I remember trying to raise my pokemon party evenly, but ending up drastically under-leveled by the time I reached the elite four. I had to spend hours and hours and hours of grinding in victory road to get them strong enough to contend and beat the elite four.

I played MapleStory from its NA launch. I don't care what anyone says, it's the pinnacle of Korean grindy p2w MMOs. Weeks to level up for your job advancements and your BiS gear could explode when you upgraded it, setting you back months.

Probably exalted cenarian circle in vanilla wow.
Solid month of grinding mobs on a PvP server and buying every 1g text off the AH I could.
Got me one of the best in slot warlock daggers in the game. Of course it was obsolete when burning crusade came out.

Back in my RuneScape days, I used to make arrow shafts for money.
I would walk in a circle of trees for hours, cutting them down as the trees grew back.

Knew somebody growing up that leveled up to level 100 on ff8 before even doing the fire cavern mission at the start of the game

next level grinding was some text based MUDs i played.
you have to type every action and you gain experienced by repeating certain actions.
Set up a 3rd party bot to run commands for you for hours and park your character in a low traffic are and hope no one catches you.

Grinding the Library in the Inverted Castle on Symphony of the Night to get the Crissaegrim sword was always a haul.

FFXIV, grinding tapers for Ifrit pre ARR.
Dark Souls 3, grinding souls in the Grand Archive before taking on the rest of the game.

They couldn't make a game like the original EverQuest anymore.
The actual game itself was kind of garbage to be honest. It was basically a big world with mobs to fight. There really wasn't much in the way of structured progression.
Playing the game was pretty much logging in, spending 30-45 minutes traveling to a specific zone, spending 1-2 hours looking for a group, getting a group, and then spending the next 3-4 hours (unless your group falls apart shortly after you join) sitting in the exact same spot beating monsters over the head. It was glorious though.
Being able to interact with people from all over the world was a relatively new concept in those days and the people kept you playing. The actual game was just a backdrop.
That said, there was certainly some bull shite that is amazing anyone put up with in those days. The first of which is the level grinding itself. To put in perspective, you might spend 1-2 weeks in-game before getting to level 10. In the higher levels, it might take a month to go from one level to another. Just getting a single section of the XP bar filled was considered making serious progress.
I wouldn't call EverQuest a "hard" game, but death could set you back hours/days, and if you died in a bad spot, you might end up loosing all your hard earned equipment and money.
Sometimes farming for a specific loot drop or a specific mob was just silly with 2% spawn chances or day and a half respawn timers on top of rare drops.

this sounds like a real life version of the scene in south park where they hide in the woods and kill boars for a month

Don’t forget camping a specific spot for up to a week straight for a one time drop

You could make some gold doing it though.

My guild in WoW ran ZG for the longest time and only saw the Tiger mount drop once. I rolled a 99 for it. It was glorious.

Lionheart disc one in FF8.
It really isn’t that bad of a grind…but I also love triple triad. I do it every time I start a new game.

When epic weapons came out we had a "gentlemen's agreement" rotation on our server (Rathe) for one of the items which dropped for the Cleric epic weapon. When you got to the portion Skyfire portion of the quest you have to wait for a dragon to spawn and this fricker was on a random timer which was something like any time after 3 days or so. The "agreement" was that clerics would just sit in line and wait for a spawn. You basically just sat there and waited your turn, which could be weeks. If memory serves (it's been well over a decade), I think our primary cleric sat there for a month.
Exceptions were made for people who accidentally disconnected but came right back as well as for those who changed users (ie: the player needed to go to work or sleep so they logged out and a friend, family member, guild mate, etc. logged their cleric back in to hold their place in line).
When Ragefire spawned, everyone present would help kill it, but being careful not to overpower the group containing the cleric whose turn it was (the group doing the most damage got the kill, although the corpse would open for anyone to loot from it after a while).
It was fricking brutal.
