Whiskey...How Do Y'all Mix?

I'm not sure what's happened to my taste buds over the past few months, but I've grown quite accustomed to whiskey. At first, I would mix a Crown and Coke with ice. I've since gotten to where I prefer room temp whiskey with just a splash of water in it.
I've just started whiskey drinking, and my experience is very limited. Is putting a splash of water in with your whiskey considered a bad thing?
Once I finish off my Crown and Jameson and I'll continue to try different varieties.

Whiskey on the rocks. Splash of water is fine.

Seven Up or ginger ale

neat is fine of course, but I like a pour over a few cubes of ice. I like the way the smell and taste changes while the ice melts. Then, rinse and repeat..

On occasion, I'll make a Kentucky Mule.
Crushed ice
60 ml Buffalo Trace Bourbon
200ml Fever-Tree Ginger Beer
1 Wedge of Lime

I love a good Jack and coke to this day! Jim Beam and coke when tailgating on occasions.
My better bourbons are often matched with large, clear ice cube or used in an old fashioned.
But to answer your question, there is no wrong way to drink it, just whatever way the mood strikes you. The flavor profile changes from the first sip to the last.

In my 10 oz yeti- plenty of ice, 5 count Makers, top with water
In my 20 oz yeti- plenty of ice, 7-8 count Makers, top with water
That’s my go to when I’m having 1-2 stiff bourbon drinks.
I also enjoy Bulleit, and Woodford for special occasions. I tried to try them all and decided that instead I would just stick to what I liked.

A good bourbon needs no mix. On the rocks for me. Knob Creek, 4 Roses , Uncle Nearest

We don’t. (^ he’s right).
On the other hand, learn how to make a couple good cocktails for variety. Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, sours, etc.

Same here. For years I didn't believe in people being affected differently by drinking certain alcohols, but I found out I can get pretty stupid when drinking whiskey.
I've gotten in more arguments, had more anger issues----generally turned into a drunk I personally detest being around, so I quit drinking whiskey.
I can drink the clear liquors and stick mainly to vodka and rum, but like some gin or tequila for a change, and NEVER get to the point I reached when drinking whiskey.
But when I did drink whiskey, it was either neat or a JD Black and coke with a squeeze of lemon to knock down the sweetness of the cola.

Drink it however you like. Splash of water will proof it down and open up some flavors you may not notice drinking it neat. Careful though, whiskey (and the hunt for the "good stuff") can become an addiction

triple or quad shot of crown over ice with the smallest splash of water *chef's kiss*

Try a low proof bourbon next. Maybe Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark, or Four Roses.
Then, if you like bourbon, step up to some higher proof stuff. Or try some scotch

Usually with air but sometimes an ice cube or two in the 120+ proofs.

Straight Jameson Orange or with a splash of ginger ale.
