Today I ended up down a rabbit hole on "digestifs", after-dinner drinks such as Sambuca, Grand Marnier, Anisette, etc.

I didn't realize that one of the primary roles of these "digestifs" in olden times was to aid digestion after large, multi-course meals (versus "apertifs" to set the palate).

Now I am curious about testing out a few of these to find a personal go-to after a big meal.

Any favorites from the F&D Board? Not just in terms of taste but actually helping with digestion.

ETA: Yes, I am old.

A Greek Professor is really great for after dinner, especially on a cold night:

1 part Brandy or Cognac
1/2 part Nocello
1/2 part Frangelico

I put in a chilled glass. It burns so good.

ETA: not sure if I used the term “parts” correctly but substitute with shot to make more sense.

My favorite after dinner drink is Strega. It's viscous and sweet so I prefer it chilled and slightly diluted, served up. It has a refreshing minty aftertaste that lingers. I replaced my usual Chartreuse with Strega a few years ago and really enjoy the change.

Some others to consider are,

Cynar (CHEE-nar)
Montenegro
Frenet Branca
Amaro CioCiaro

Really, anything with Amaro in the name.

I’m not sure they will actually help with digestion, but absolutely try some out. So many options out there for you

I like a Sambuca after a big Italian meal and Grand Marnier is always delicious.

My go-to after meals at home, sipped.

quote:

Is Jägermeister a digestif?
The liqueur was originally brewed as a “digestif,” a post-dinner alcoholic drink to help settle the stomach and help with digestion.

Laugh all you want.

Lots of great ideas. Thanks! I will have to snag some "airplane bottles" at the liquor store and start trying these out.

If you want to try Amaro, I'd go with the Amaro Montenegro suggestion a few have made. It's a good entry into the spirit. Some of the others may be a less gentle entry.
