You want qualified teachers with Masters Degrees? Start paying $100,000 a year for STEM majors and specializations. I'd drop my career, which makes more than that, to be a high school teacher. Those kids would be better for it if they had those like me teaching them, giving them sense of responsibility and accountability. Don't come at me about wanting qualified teachers until you back it up with real talk. Louisiana obviously wants the worst.

For 100k I’d quit my job today and go teach.

BESE will change their policy, it's state law now.

Back when I became a teacher the test was called the NTE. I took all the parts and passed them before I took any education classes. They were easy.
I have heard of people taking the Praxis test several times before they could pass it and this was after they had obtained a BS.
Something is seriously wrong with our education system.

No standards are being lowered. If you already have a college degree you should not have to pass a standardized test to display college ability. You already did that earning your degree. Again many states do not require the hoops Louisiana has you jump through.

That’s Louisiana public schools, the smaller towns are ok, the closer you get to so-called Culture the worse they get.

Louisiana will never see an improvement in education until it starts creating an environment that supports that improvement.

1. Recruit Better Quality Teachers and Pay Better
2. Trash the Teachers Union
3. Invest in Technology and Science resources.
4. Creating equitable access to resources across all districts.
5. Zero tolerance policy.

My dumbass got a 26 on the ACT. I only took it once.

(Only needed a 19 for TOPS back then)

I think 22 is a good base

I’m a teacher in Bossier Parish who got an alternative certification through iTeach Louisiana. AKA Praxis.

This bothers me.

He said it took him several attempts to pass the Praxis, and that he knows several others who couldn’t pass and moved on to other careers.

This is more of an indictment on iTeach which is clearly not preparing their candidates for the Praxis.

There are three that you have to take. An initial entrance test that can be exempted if you had at least a 21 on your ACT, which I had. A subject matter test, and later a “final” which I passed the first time but I have known people that had to take it more than once.

The fact is, teaching in Louisiana is in crisis mode. If they could retain teachers, they wouldn’t have an issue. But because of shitty student and shitty administrators, most teachers don’t make it five years.

Alabama is getting ready to join the club and state board of education is voting next week to "adjust" praxis passing score. LINK

I knew back in the day when they first implemented that rule that it wouldn’t last; there are too many dumbasses that are unable to pass that test. I had a buddy who failed it 2 or 3 times and the school was pressuring him so the next time he took it, when he was filling in his info he put that he was black instead of white. Passed with flying colors.

Yep, you would have to practically be a masochist to go into public education now. Standards for student behavior are almost gone altogether, as is the teacher’s authority in the classroom. It only takes a few defiant students to tear the process down, and they’ve created a huge amount of loopholes that prevent schools from getting rid of those students. The system is broken, and what it would take to fix it won’t be allowed because of politics.

The thing is, if you completed college then the first part of the Praxis should not be so hard you are failing 2,3,4+ times....

A lot of areas including those in Central, Ascension, and St. James are struggling to fill positions at the moment.

The easy answer is to "pay more" but why when you are lowering the requirements to be a teacher while increasing the workload. Of course you will have teachers leaving in droves because why work in a profession where you are are doing more work, yet still getting blamed on student scores and behavior, while dealing with entitled parents

IMO the Content test and PLT are much more important to determine if someone with a college degree is qualified and those aren’t going away.

What does the Praxis cover? Does it determine if you know the subject matter you are going to teach or is it a test over teaching practices (that have little to do with how competent a teacher is)?

To be fair this is misleading and there is a lot of confusion in this. Teachers still have to pass 2 of the 3 Praxis test to be a certified teacher. They took out the praxis for your content area. But the other 2 you still have to pass

Oh, the only one worth a shite.

Yeah. That makes sense. Assessing measurable objectives with regard to content seems like a misguided practice. Actually, it’s racist.
