What do you hate most about the 49ers playoff game that ended our 2011 team?

For me it’s the illegal hit on Pierre Thomas at the end of our first drive. I think everyone has forgotten about it and they only remember the Vernon Davis big plays at the end.

On our first drive, we drove the whole field, and we were about to score a TD and set the tone in San Francisco’s house. Instead, Donte Whitner’s illegal head to head hit on Pierre caused him to fumble and turn the ball over on the goal line, and it also broke his jaw and knocked him out of the game. Unsurprisingly, no flag was thrown and the turnover stood.

This play robbed the Saints of a touchdown and it set the tone in San Fran’s favor by taking away all the Saints momentum. It also showed that dirty plays would go unchecked that day by the officials. I really think the game would have been completely different if the Saints had scored on that first drive. The Saints would have won easily.

100%. Whitner would be flagged and ejected for that shite today. It was brutally dirty then, now, and forever.

Yep. 100% illegal hit. He straight speared Thomas in the head.

But the 5+ turnovers the team gave up didnt help either.

I remember yelling at the tv and scaring my newborn in the process.

After that day my eyes glazed over and I lost my child like emotion for sports.
I began to laugh at sports a lot more

Even the Minny miracle and no-call
Weren’t more than an eye-roll for me

Now I scan this forum from time to time and watch on average two games a year

This game is the game that will live in infamy. I'm still convinced if we win this game we have a great shot another Super Bowl victory.

That goal line hit on PT that knocked him out and forced a fumble instead of a TD

The Alex Smith TD run with 2 minutes left. Had it been Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson it wouldn't have been so bad. Alex fricking Smith running for 28 yards to take the lead at the 2 minute warning? frick that guy.

If my memory is right, the Alex Smith 30 yard scramble for a TD to seal it.

The dumb arse defensive calls that let Vernon Davis run wild.

Mostly Williams's play calls. All of the blitzes that didn't hit but were continued. The Smith TD run on like 3rd on 7 that we overloaded the defense and he just ran the other way with no pressure.

Losing a game with no penalties and giving up 3 FGs.

Absolutely. That was the original no-call. Set the tone for the entire game.

Although I still wish Graham would have gone down at the 1 instead of scoring.

He put Pierre to sleep with a quickness but back then it was legal.

There was an interview done after that year. The 49ers players were basically saying that the saints defense was easy to fool bc they used the same freaking blitzes against them that year in pre season.

Same. The second I saw PT Bruiser careening towards Earth face first I knew the chances dropped big time.

The fact that we had the best offense in NFL and one of the best in NFL history, and couldn't play DEFENSE when it counted!
That may have been the best Saints team ever. They won 11 straight games. And they would have KILLED the Giants in the Dome.

2011 was one of 5 years that the Saints had a great opportunity to at least get to the Super Bowl, along with 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.
