In all your years of working, who would you say was the worst boss you ever had? What factors made them the worst ever?

When I was little, I worked for Santa.

He was a real jerk on Black Friday.

I can't say I've ever had a straight up completely bad one. I have had a couple of young micromanagers and a one that threw me under the bus on more than one occasion instead of having my back.

I’ve got three, and they all had one thing in common. None of them knew how to manage or educate people, much less communicate effectively. IOW, they barked out orders with vague directions at best and almost no training whatsoever. Well, that’s not true. They also all had enormous egos to feed and that needed reassurance.

I had one that stole tens of thousands of dollars and was only caught because he couldn't get a car loan and forged company letterhead and checks to rent himself a truck on the company dime for like 6 months.

But he was otherwise a pretty personable and reasonable guy. Just a fricking idiot who thought he'd never get caught.

I had two bosses that were convicted of defrauding the U.S. government of $100+ million dollars and are each serving time in federal prison now. As far as day to day operations they left me alone and let me do my thing.

Worked directly for an ops manager of a big Fab shop. The only thing he was good at was being full of shite.

Maybe one can’t even remember his name… but as I thought about this topic I don’t have one, every boss I didn’t like at the time I ended up with great respect for, I guess we really pushed each other’s buttons, but they seemed to always get the best out of me in the end.

At my first job out of undergrad one manager I had was promising everything to customers and had the devs complete new features on insanely tight deadlines without giving time to test them. He then blamed clients for bugs and told them to just get better hardware instead of giving us time to fix the software which had memory leaks and was otherwise bloated.

At the same company, I was hired to work on a new "revolutionary" product. For the first few months things seemed all right. The company had some weird policies though. There was three dev teams completely siloed from each other. Devs were not allowed to discuss anything work related with devs from other teams. I didn’t think this is normal for an Enterprise level company. This led to a very awkward "small-talk" culture between the teams.

I had no idea how some of the devs got hired there with this clueless Manager. The same Manager insisted that learning git was a "waste of time" and kept making .bak files and copying files between duplicate project folders. When he got stuck, he deleted and re-forked the whole repo. Another guy had an external monitor connected to his laptop running at something like an 800x600 resolution. He kept working like that as his single monitor. He didn't last his probation period.
