No mention of Dark City, but that definitely fits the bill.

I'll second this. Massively underrated. I put Blade Runner 2049 because it's fantastic but gets bashed. Dark City is fantastic but people just don't know about it. Amazon Prime has it for streaming.

Pitch Black and Riddick both relied heavily on the similar settings if not stories.

Mostly barren, hostile planet. - check

Swarms of ravenous monsters which emerge from the ground and devour all life on a long-term cycle - check

Young sidekick which needs to be taught how not to die. ( Jack / Alien dog creature) - Check

Oh, and he gets saved by a girl at the end, right before he's going to be done in by the monsters.

what's that movie (old age is causing my mind to blank out) where there's like a naked man travelling through space in a clear bubble over millions of years. "The globe" or 'the bubble" or something like that.

it had huge hype when it was coming out and i remember the visuals were great but for the life of me the name is lost to dead brain cells.

eta i remember! THE FOUNTAIN!

The Fountain had some of the best teaser trailers and I was so hyped for that movie but it really fell short on the story telling. Amazing visuals though!

For some reason this reminds me, I think Cloud Atlas is underappreciated and underrated. It was an ambitious effort, even if the results got a little weird. I remember it was pretty polarizing, and now it's rarely mentioned.

Wow I had completely forgotten about Aniara. Bleak, and serious sci-fi. I didn't love it, but it's definitely my kind of movie.

Holy $hi….Cow. How have I never heard of this film? Just watched the trailer. It looks very interesting and a little disturbing. Thank you for posting.

Yes for Dark City. A perfect blend of sci fi and film noir. Can’t recommend it enough. If you’ve never seen it, stop what you’re doing and go watch it.

Amazing novel that was always going to be very difficult to adapt to film. They did a respectable job of it.
