Is it Sci-fi?

Idk, but IMDB says it is.

Just good entertainment that went under the radar.

people get all hung up 'God worship' for a certain movie and are ready-at-their-keyboards to shite on anything that doesn't meet or exceed what they perceive the original to be.

2049 was a great flick. one of my favorite movies to watch over and over.

original blade runner is my favorite or second favorite movie all time (Alien and it fight for that spot)

i thought 2049 was great. i dont understand the hate.

Gattaca

Great movie and it's every single bit as relevant today if not more so.

All that genetic engineering shite is going to happen eventually.

You wouldn't consider The Fifth Element as sci fi? Wut in tarnation?

I think people throw around the term sci-fi too loosely

I would describe Fifth Element as some sort of demented Space Opera, even if somewhat entertaining. (Without Leeloo it would be unwatchable)

One can argue whether Space Opera is SciFi all day, I suppose, but I generally agree that there should be some element of "science" in "science fiction."

For example, I do not see Star Wars as "science fiction" at all. Pure Space Opera.

I don't think Primer, Moon, Gattaca...or hell Time Crimes are underrated. Especially Gattaca...I mean everyone loves that movie. And Primer is a cult classic.

A lot of good mentions already.

Oblivion is a good one, because it's fairly well known, but it is actually a top tier science fiction film.

I think we've all said Sunshine is a Top 10 science fiction film.... until the last 20 min.

No mention of Dark City, but that definitely fits the bill.

If we're throwing out slightly more under the radar stuff - I find Source Code to be underrated. And Upgrade, in the same boat. B-Tier film but definitely underrated.

Coherence is my pick for something slightly more obscure. Love that movie in a Primer sort of way.

It’s somewhat of a parody of itself, but I think Starship Troopers is an objectively fantastic movie because of its self-awareness. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and just works. I may get smashed for this though

You won't, and if you do I will be standing next to you ready to fistfight.

Without seeing the thread yet, the obvious answer to me is Primer, mainly because so few people have ever even heard of it (I know many on this board have).

If alien movies count, I'll also add Alien Abduction (2014).
It's one of the best alien movies ever IMO, even being found footage.

Some good ones that I see mentioned (even though some are definitely not underrated at all) that I will echo:

Starship Troopers
Sunshine
Moon
Pandorum
Total Recall
They Live
Event Horizon
Ex Machina
Fifth Element
Oblivion
Prometheus
The History of Time Travel (very unexpectedly good)
No Escape (WTF? But it was mentioned and it's good )
Coherence

That was a fantastic, tight little movie.

I need to find that thread about obscure sci-fi/mulitverse movies we had a few months ago that recommended it.

OK so I listed them based on general perception/audience.

It seems people are trying to list underrated ones for this board and few that fit the bill have been listed.

If we're talking underrate for this board, then I'll give some much more obscure titles:

Another Earth is Great...and underrated.

First foray into Brit Marling who I thought would explode.

Boy, Valerian was the most frustrating movie. It was absolutely gorgeous to watch, but I hated the main cast.

This is why I haven't watched it.

I like Besson's stuff, but Cara Delevkngnenene scares the shite out of me
