Lunopolis is a low budget found footage sci fi movie that....was shot in/around BR. When I watched it I spotted some highways I recognized.

I would describe Fifth Element as some sort of demented Space Opera, even if somewhat entertaining.

One can argue whether Space Opera is SciFi all day, I suppose, but I generally agree that there should be some element of "science" in "science fiction."

For example, I do not see Star Wars as "science fiction" at all. Pure Space Opera.

Thank you, this is exactly what I meant. Star Wars is a great example of a space movie that doesn't make any attempt to be sci-fi.

Spielberg put a lot of work into making Minority Report a look into future technologies, including the future of transportation.

Sci-fi:

Not sci-fi:

I considered Spring a horror film, not to split hairs.

I can see the science fiction angle.

Great movie in either case.

Spring, Upgrade, Coherence, The Invitation, The Endless (which could make this list). The last 10-15 years of indie science fiction/horror has been REALLY strong. Heck, I'd throw Ex Machina in there among a bunch of others.

Depends upon whether you want to be a purist.

Personally, I consider the first few Alien films to be horror rather than science fiction, albeit horror set in space.

Does a film become "SciFi" just be being set in space? A RomCom set on a space station is still just a RomCom.

I think Alien is a much tougher one to split. And I'm actually with you on the Space Opera bit, particularly about Star Wars - it's not a science fiction film. THe Fifth Element is a little harder to decipher.

I think the biggest problem is that we look at genres as affecting the same elements, when they really don't, when I think it's generally a plot oriented discussion - and what shapes the aim of the plot.

And that there are two levels of "genres." But we've equated Drama to Action to Horror to Romantic Comedy to Comedy to Science Fiction and think they all are measured in the same way, when they aren't.

There are probably 3-4 blanket genres - Drama, Comedy, Adventure, and something I can't quite put my finger on...

Ok I would derail the thread, so I'll stop there. That's a whole other thread and discussion.

Another Earth and Spring are great choices

I almost listed Spring, but wasn't sure if it fit into the "sci-fi" category

The Hidden, from 1987, is a very good film that is often overlooked.

But an interesting one. You should start a thread.

Personally, I think that films which blur the lines between the genres are often the most interesting for the viewer.

Not really an "underrated" Sci-Fi flick but has anyone ever seen The Ice Pirates? I watched it once in the 80s when I was a kid, it was pretty bad from what I remember kinda like a Star Wars parody but nothing close to Spaceballs level.

Well, based on the declarations of the elitely nuanced in this thread, Spring is very "sci fi" because:

Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick

I know they're not perfect but I really did like both. I just wish Riddick had gone a different way than basically be a re-heated version of Pitch Black.

Basically got remade as Fallen (a Denzel film), with the alien recast as a demon.

No offense to Kyle, but Fallen was the better film, IMO.

It may stretch the the definition, but I think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was exceptionally well done.

It wasn't underrated when it came out, but you rarely see it mentioned anymore.

Interesting.

I don't see the two as being even very similar.

Pitch Black is a pretty decent horror film (just set in space), and Riddick is sort of a Space Opera and sort of a cheesy action film (neither element of which is particularly good).

Of course. It's why a movie like Aliens resonates with people. It's both pure action and horror at the same time.

Or like Die Hard...action movie and Christmas movie.
