I forgot how great the first few seasons of Friends were

I didn’t care for the last half of the series but the first few seasons were great, Rachel never wore a bra, Joey and Chandler were great team before they changed Chandler’s character in the later seasons.

I’ve got a friend that keeps telling me how trash it is because of how much I love it. He says it’s one of the worst sitcoms to ever be on television along with BBT. He loves him some Seinfeld and Curb. Basically, anything Larry David touches is gold and everything else is trash.

I haven't done a rewatch for years now, but at the time it was definitely must see and I had my VCR set to record it each Thursday at 7pm. Occasionally I'll click on a highlight video of funny scenes and the earlier season do still hold up.
Zero shame in having liked Friends.

Bailed when they ditched the monkey. They abandoned so much potential character development.

I’ve always said the funniest moment in the entire series is season 1 when Joey does the Sigmund Freud musical

Best comedy show from its era.
I still laugh out loud at it.

Is that the Joe Stalin / Holden McGroin episode?

Friends doesn't hold up very well for me at all. My 19 year old stepdaughter loves it, and people her age have attached themselves to it for whatever reason. I will say that the absolute best parts of the show do still hold up pretty well (like the "One with the Embryos" episode with the trivia contest). But I've caught it here and there in syndication and it just doesn't hit as well as it did 20 years ago, which makes sense but still is disappointing. I used to watch it weekly.
That being said though, it's still a decent show to put on in the background.

Your friend seems pretty cool and smart tbh

I grew up watching Friends. I loved it. I get why people may not like it. As I've gotten older, it has fallen down my list of favorite comedies. Having said all that, I think that is my favorite episode of any comedy I've ever watched.

I was born in 1982, so I was prime TV watching age during most of Friends' run, but I never made it a point to watch it.
My wife was a huge fan, so she finally convinced me to watch it all the way through. We are in the middle of season 4 now, and I feel like it's hit its stride. Ross just revealed his massive keyboard playing skillz in the one we watched last night.
Seasons 1-2 were just ok. I like seasons 3-4. I'm sure these characters will all jump the shark by the end of season 5 though.
Overall its a really good series, but I'd rank sitcoms like this:
Tier 1: The office, Parks and Rec
Tier 2: Seinfeld, Psych
Tier 3: Friends
Not knocking friends but I don't think it will compete with my T1 and T2 shows. Maybe it get's better, but just comparing seasons 3 and 4 of Friends to Seasons 3 and 4 of the office, and Friends is WAY behind.

I think as new generations become adults, they can relate to the characters (minus how far behind tech was); and as we grow and mature, we no longer relate as much and the show begins to lose some of its luster.

quote:Do like this thread is saying and go back and watch the first season. It's pretty cool to see how the show broke some new ground, even as it debuted amidst a murderer's row of sitcoms on its own network (Seinfeld, Frasier, Wings, etc.)
Friends doesn't hold up very well for me at all.
The writing really was different. And Ross' comedic voice was a completely new thing at the time.
What's been weird for me upon rewatch is how I've enjoyed Phoebe and Joey much more than back in the day. I'm still shaking my head at how much they ruined Chandler.

Speaking of overrated....

I'm in the minority because I think the first season of Friends is unwatchable. Marcel the monkey was stupid, there's no way Rachel would sleep with a guy a butt ugly as Paolo, and the dialogue was simply geared toward inserting words like uterus, penis, and lesbian for cheap laughs. The show definitely got better as it went along.
But it's all subjective isn't it. While I like Seinfeld, The Office and Parks and Rec are ridiculously dull-witted crap.

It had funny moments but was tedious somewhat in that Ross was a giant pussy throughout and the notion of them all living in those giant apartments in NYC was absurd.

The Holiday Armadillo gets me every time. Friends haters have to be miserable people.

I believe they also went on to have some rent control explanation for Monica's apartment. Chandler and Joey's was 2 bedroom, but was certainly nothing to write home about.
