If their incorporation hurts the city of Baton Rouge, it's because the city is illegally using funds they shouldn't be.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Not sure how they think the richest part of Baton Rouge can’t fund itself but central and Zachary can.

ETA: why is the unincorporated part of EBR responsible for the well-being of the city proper?

There's a better chance of fixing stupid than Baton Rouge.

You mean Baton Rouge can't fund itself without St.George....that's what he really meant.

Zachary has been incorporated since the late 1800's so that point is moot, but I agree with you about Central. How much money does the City of Baton Rouge siphon off of unincorporated areas of the parish is the the big question.

he budget presented at trial did not include the cost of paying the sheriff’s office for law enforcement, the ruling states.

Why does the sheriff's office need to be paid to patrol areas it already patrols?

Pretty much.

Solution obviously can’t be “BR needs to reign in its fricking spending” but instead “it’s unfair that people want their own tax money used on them.”

I would say that people should riot in BR but that may do millions of dollars in improvements.

Unincorporated area brings in $50m or so. That all goes into the general fund, half of which goes straight into the budgets of BRPD and BRFD, neither of which service unincorporated EBR.

This is part is my favorite. The city and parish were consolidated in 1947 so parish residents outside the city limits could use city resources (and vote in city elections) (we all know what demographic benefitted from this). Three generations later their successors didn’t realize they’d have to pay for the resources they’d used all this time. Hate to see it.

City parish merger was in 1980 and in part due to the Voting Rights Act making it damn near impossible to continue annexing residential areas because it would change the demographics of the city.

There hasn’t been a huge swath of residential land incorporated since about 1984 (Sherwood between Airline and I-12).

Not so coincidentally, damn near all expansion in BR since 1980 has taken place in areas which aren’t in the city limits.

Almost as if BR were a rancid shithole on a number of levels that discouraged growth.

“We’re not done yet,” says incorporation spokesperson Andrew Murrell. “We will next take our case to the appeals court.”

It's unfortunate that they have to appeal to get the correct decision. Activist judges are a blight on our nation.
