If you want a bulletproof Mercedes, just get a 1980s 240D, baw. Nothing pulls the poon like 0-60 in 33 seconds

Dated a girl in college who brought her grandparent's diesel sedan to school. It was a 60s-era Mercedes, I think, maybe older, but in immaculate shape. I was kind of excited when she let me drive it because I'd never driven one before. As for 0-60 in 33 seconds, only if you pushed it off a cliff. Driving down a country road, we were holding up a line of tractors.

Get a GL350 diesel, that's your best bet at high mileage and reliability if you have to have a GL.

I owned a 124 with the V8, it was actually cheap to run. They weren’t very complicated vehicles.

My buddy bought a used 2014 diesel. It told him to add DEF. He did, filled it up. Still said it was low. After a few engine start, the computer cut the ignition off because it didn't think it had the DEF. Got it to the dealership and found out the main computer had water damage. They wanted to replace the computer and the wiring harness. $15K was the quote he was given.

This thread reminds me of my Triumph motorcycle that I owned. I did some work on it myself, but goddam those parts were expensive as frick. A fricking screw was like $10. If I tried to build that bike from parts it would probably cost $150k.

don't know what led to the downfall of once great(as far as quality) product manufacturers but my sister(no pics,) has been driving Mercedes since the late 70s, I thought the first one was going to last forever, nothing ever went wrong with it, she kept it for years and when she eventually wanted a newer one the paint and interior still looked new, each subsequent one she has purchased has been of less quality in every area and she doesn't get near the life out of them as she did the first one

Just curious. Why would you buy one of the most unreliable car brands if you were going for long term reliability?

I enjoy the handling and speed of German SUVs and am trying to find the most reliable one. Porsche is too small, BMW is trash (prior owner) and Lexus drives like grandpa’s 1980 Cadillac. I am trying to find reliability and drivability.

I don’t mind some repairs, but if those costs will be extraordinary, I will just lease.

Prepare to spend about $10k-$15k between 75k-120k miles to replace the things that wear out over time

What the hell is wearing out in this mileage range that cost so much?

What breaks in these cars? Or should I ask, what DOESN'T break?

I would never own a German car out of warranty. My 2019 A5 has 12k miles on it and is on the 3rd radio/MMI interface. ($5k a pop outside of warranty)

Sold Mrs. H20 Tiger's 2017 Q5 the month before the warranty expired.

Extended warranty on my X5 is like $250 a month. For that much I’ll save for the imminent disaster just to have it ready instead of that.

*Also luxury vehicles usually treat them like you treat it. Keep up with maintenance and just be prepared to know any issues are expensive when they happen to German autos and they will happen. Part of the price owning the vehicle.

For what it’s worth, I have almost 200k on a 08 Land Rover.

I think the new ones are charmless, I’m too traditional, but they may be reliable.

My Buddy went on a road trip in his brand new Land Rover. Caught on fire and completely burned in Washington State. They brought him a brand new one for what it’s worth.
