This is totally normal. Just look at all the other professional athletes that have collapsed in the last year alone….

First, the runners have to be willing to use them. Maybe they were pushing for a good time and didn't want to stop for water.
Trust me, this is not strange to die after finishing a half in that type heat.
Yeah, I get that. He was probably dehydrated, and that’s not something to dismiss.
What struck me was the article said he collapsed at the end of the race. He wouldn’t have had the opportunity to refuse help at that point. Need more details for sure.

If I had a nickel for every time a world class runner died at the finish line…

Imagine how bad it would have been for him if he wasn’t boosted.

Was he vaccinated is the question.
He still hasn't been ID'd, so can't say for sure.
But, here are the guidelines for participating in marathons and races in NYC
COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements: What You Need to Know
quote:
What Is Required
Any individual age 12 or above registered as a participant, as well as staff or volunteers working at an NYRR race, event, or program will be required to attest that they have received a full series of vaccines authorized by the United States Food & Drug Administration or the World Health Organization. The following are the only type of vaccines that will be accepted:
U.S. Food & Drug Administration
Johnson & Johnson: One dose
Moderna: Two doses
Pfizer: Two doses
World Health Organization:
AstraZeneca: Two doses
Includes Oxford, Bioscience, COVISHIELD, and Vaxzevria
Sinopharm: Two doses
Sinovac: Two doses
ETA: Also showing proof of a negative test is NOT sufficient to be able to run

People do die from heat in a marathon.
Ideal temps to run halfs and fulls are around 40 degrees.
Temps in Brooklyn today were near 90.
Organizers should have seriously considered canceling the event.
The race was ran early though, so while it did hit 90 during the day, it was not 90 when the runner died.
From the NY post article:

The temperature at 9 a.m. at Coney Island was already 70 degrees with 83% humidity, according to Fox Weather.
Still pretty hot for this time of year in that part of the country, but it had not hit 90 yet when this occurred.

Exact thing at the exact half marathon happened to our friend's brother several years ago. In his early 30s. Died right after finishing.
But the 15 hospitalized seems really high.
I just lost one of my best friends to a heart attack. He'd just turned 48. Vaccinated but also one of the least healthy people I've ever known (self-imposed).

Let’s all take a bet.
How many of the affected were vaxxed?
How do these numbers compare to the last time the Brooklyn half marathon happened?

70s and into the 80s should be okay for a half marathon. I don't think the heat played a factor, hydration maybe.

Running marathons has never been healthy. Just too much when you throw in high heat
I know this place likes to make every death these days due to the covid vax but this is a bit much

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year up here. It was 93 degrees here in Jersey. Running a race at that temperature sounds foolish.
