Chauna Banks on the EBR Teacher Shortage

GOOD Friday morning!
ON yesterday, I went to the EBRPSS Job Fair at Liberty High. Upon driving up I see folks with picket signs. I asked someone what was going on. I was told teachers were upset about their positions being "impacted".
Either these are teachers that have been in the system less than 10 years, or they have been very privileged. In today’s school climate of charters, it is no guarantee what the enrollment is going to look like or how the focus of the school may change. All I expect from EBRPSS is an assignment that yields a continuous stream of income. None of us should be so attached to a building, principal, staff, or student population that it dominates us.
Changes are good and EBRPSS should move people around from top to bottom every 4-5 years. Familiarity often led to all kinds of preferential treatment, schisms, lack of productivity, and complacency. We often talk about diversity and inclusion in business and industry. That should also be a goal for EBRPSS!
However, to do so we must get extremely skilled administrators that are in one accord regarding school culture, teacher accountability, and student performance. Every “Principal of the Year,” “Teacher of the Year,” “Counselor of the Year” should be based on a long-term record of accomplishment. We chose folks based on popularity and the next thing you know they have a big promotion at Central Office.
The only permanent location I claim is the one with my home address. I like a new challenge, am easily bored, and much less tolerant with adults that care more about saving themselves than the students. If you genuinely want to teach, reach, and preach to students, it will show up wherever you are placed....IN THE STUDENTS.
The drawback is I do not invest a lot into forming relationships. I do not participate in extra-curricular activities or volunteer for off-campus events. Gone are the days when I purchased embroidered or printed t-shirts and sweatshirts. In all honesty, I have become detached from my varied school surroundings. I remember a time when I was intentional and “knew by name” my students, parents, and co-workers, none of those traits currently exist.
My mama would say, “There are ONLY two days that matter when a job get tough. She asked, “Do you know what they are?” I would guess, “Saturday and Sunday”! She would respond, “No. The only two days that matter on a job are PAYDAY and OFFDAY!”
CHANGE YOUR MINDSET...CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

No one wants to teach at a school where no one cares. Admins, students, or parents.
I guess she just believes that every teacher should be EXACTLY like here, no exceptions.

This mindset will 100% result in a failed system.

WTF did I just read?
Such a typical mindset.
For anybody with a work ethic, every day on the job matters.

Evidently, she has never been stabbed.
She should go and teach in the local MAE class.
MAE = Angola Preparatory Education Setting

I see what you did there.

This mentality is dangerous for any professional. We see this at McDonald’s or Popeyes, and have come to expect it. As teachers, working only for a payday is asking for half assed employees.

This is the shite St George wants to avoid but the Advocate just wrote a glowing article about the judge who who is presiding the case. This is terrible for the residents of St George and I for one will be leaving EBR if they unconstitutionally remove our votes. The school system is a complete dumpster fire along with all other parts of the city.

No one wants to teach in a war zone where the kids don’t care at best and the parents don’t care either.
Hence why someone wants to work at Lee, BRMHS, or Scotlandville Magnet as those kids have to work to be there.
If I were sent from Lee to Glen Oaks or Belaire, I would be looking for other options.

Is she really telling the teachers that they need to mail it in in order to improve the school system or am I misreading that?

I would trust a literal pile of shite to teach a class of students and be far more effective with better results than have chauna banks teach.

I think she is saying “Baker schools are fricking godawful so why should anyone else get to succeed?”

This is exactly how you lose more teachers. If a teacher gets into a halfway decent school, they don’t want to move around every 4-5 years.
If it’s a persistently low achieving school, you would get absolutely nothing done with that kind of turnover.

this actually makes sense for a North Baton Rouge politician.

If the teachers don’t give a shite or have pride in the school where they work, how can anyone expect children to give a shite?
People are dumb.

This is so bad I don’t know where to begin.
She’s essentially asking human beings to be robots.

Also, I would never take advice from someone who can’t write.
“On yesterday”…
Seriously?!
Rule one of writing: Omit needless words.

When teachers have zero authority and you can’t expel students or discipline them, why would teachers want to “change their mindset”?
Posted on 5/15/22 at 10:04 am to tduecen
This is the mentality of Baton Rouge politicians.
High quality people don't stay in education for the paycheck. They stay in education due to the relationship with their school community.
If teachers who care have to start over every 4 or 5 years, they will go to another district or leave the profession. The only ones left will be those just collecting a pay check and those not competent enough to get a job elsewhere.
